JCCO announces scholarship plans
THE JACKSON County Community
Outreach has allocated $10,500 in scholarship
money it plans to award to 2010 Jackson County
high school graduates.
“We recognize that our critical economic
conditions are placing an increasing need for
supplemental assistance on our needy and
deserving high school graduates,” president Jim
Scott said. “The funds for our scholarships are
derived from our Annual Achievement Award
banquets.”
JCCO scholarship applications were distribut
ed in February to all four local high schools and
the Jackson County Adult Learning Center for
the 2010 Scholarship Awards. Since 1999 the
JCCO has awarded $70,500 in scholarships.
Each high school principal and designated
counselor has been advised of the criteria and
have committed strong support to make this
information available to all seniors. The win
ners will be high school graduates, who meet
the criteria and who have applied to and/or have
been accepted to a college or technical school.
Each qualified applicant will be interviewed by
the JCCO's external interview team starting the
week of March 22.
One recipient deemed to have demonstrated
outstanding leadership qualities will be honored
as the Rev. Dr. Tom Lewis Scholarship Award
winner. Rev. Lewis was a former pastor of the
Commerce Presbyterian Church and was one
of the founding members of the JCCO Board of
Directors. This award will be for $1,500 and the
other nine scholarships will be $1,000 each.
The application deadline is March 12, and
must be mailed to Jackson County Community
Outreach, P.O. Box 746, Commerce, 30529, by
the respective school counselors. The awards
will be presented at each school's Honors Day
program.

MATT MCCORD, The
Commercial Group, Norton,
spoke to Jefferson Area
Business Association mem
bers on Thursday, Feb. 18,
about the housing market
in Jackson and surrounding
counties and volume real
estate sales.
McCord reported the total
housing inventory is down
66 percent from the fourth
quarter of 2006.
“The bulk of the homes out
there are in the $150,000 or
less price range,” McCord
said.
He added that the prob
lem in Jackson County is
the number of vacant lots.
“To find someone quali
fied to buy a home is a
struggle right now,” McCord
said. “Banks have tightened
down on the qualifications
to make a loan due to so
many failures among banks
recently. If you have a
home on the market right
now, be patient with your
realtor.”
On a positive note,
McCord reported for nine
quarters in a row The
Village at Deaton Creek in
Braselton was the top sell
ing community in the metro
Atlanta area.
