Son of Confederate soldier turns 98
Brown recalls
hearing father’s
war stories
THE SON of a Confederate
soldier turned 98 years old on
Feb. 14, with a party held in
his honor in Jackson County.
James F. Brown, Sr.,
Knoxville, Tenn., was visiting
the family in Jackson County
for a month, when he turned
98. On his birthday, Tammy
and Tony Williamson, Lonnie
Williamson, Pat and Forest
Kellogg and Ray and Yvonne
Wilkes gave him a birthday
party with 32 relatives and
friends in attendance.
On Feb. 14, 1912, Brown
was born on a plantation in
Greene County, Veazey, Ga.,
and the family later moved
to Siloam, where he gradu
ated high school. He was
manager of hotels for a num
ber of years and then owned
a hotel in Pennsylvania. He
lived in a number of states
during this time, and traveled
extensively. He has outlived
two wives.
BROWN
His father was 71 when
Brown was born. His father,
James Henry Harrison
Brown, was in Co. K, 8th
Georgia Infantry Regiment,
known as the Oglethorpe
Rifles, and was in the battles
of First Manassas, Richmond,
Petersburg and the Seven-
Day Battle near Richmond
where Gen. Robert E. Lee
took command of the Army
of Northern Virginia. Brown's
father saw his first battle at
the age of 20. He was with
Gen. Lee at the Battle of
Appomattox when Gen. Lee
surrendered to Gen. Grant.
Brown’s mother, Fannie
Moore Brown, was born four
years after the Civil War
ended. She was 38 when she
married James H.H. Brown
and their son was born five
years later.
Brown’s father was born in
Oglethorpe County in 1841.
Brown recalls his father tell
ing him some stories about
the hardships of fighting in
the Civil War. James H.H.
Brown died at the age of 82.
Brown now lives with his
son, James Jr., and his wife,
Nancy, in Tellico Village near
Knoxville, Tenn.
Maysville to offer pick up for limbs, brush
THE CITY of Maysville will be picking
up limbs and brush inside the city limits on
Tuesday, March 9, for Banks County residents
and Wednesday, March 10, for Jackson County
residents.
No leaves or limbs over six feet long will be
picked up. All brush and limbs must be on the
right-of-way of the road.

Insurance topic for Women in Business
WOMEN IN Business met, Feb. 17, at First
Georgia Bank with a presentation given on
insurance coverage.
Niki Adams welcomed the group and intro
duced lunch sponsor, Cindy Phillips of State
Farm, Braselton office. Phillips discussed the
importance of insurance coverage for family,
home, life and vehicle.
Dr. Lionel Meadows, FACOG, FAACS, and
Alexa Ivester, NP-C, were also guest speak
ers. A list of services available at Meadows
Surgical Arts at Banks Crossing include:
