JCCHS student interviews for
Governor’s Honors Program
TOP INTERVIEW FOR STATEWIDE PROGRAM
JCCHS sophomore Will Cooper (right) recently inter
viewed for the Governor’s Honors Program in the area
of agriculture biotechnology. He is shown with his
advisor, Jay Borden.
A JACKSON County
Comprehensive High School
sophomore recently inter
viewed for the Governor's
Honors Program in the area of
agriculture biotechnology.
Will Cooper, who is also the
school's FFA chapter treasurer,
began as a freshman competing
in the State FFA Agriscience
Fair in Macon.
Cooper, an aspiring chef,
placed third with his study on
bacterial counts in bovine milk,
caprine milk, human milk and
baby formula. He found that
human milk had the most bac
teria of all types that were test
ed and he theorized that this
may be due to the presence of
beneficial bacteria.
For this year’s contest in
April, Cooper is completing
research on the effect of drink
ing soft drinks on the human
body and its relation to body
fluid retention.
Cooper recruited two friends
to help him with the project.
They are drinking nothing but
soft drinks with their meals for
three days and monitoring then-
weight, fluid loss to urine and
how they felt overall.
Joining Cooper in science
fair this year will be Rachel
Glenfield in the area of plant
science and Hunter Bell in the
area of agriculture mechanics.
Glenfield is new to the agri
science fair, but Bell finished
third in last year's state com
petition.
Bell built scale model utility
buildings with varying spac
ing of studs. In the industry,
standard spacing is sixteen
inches. Bell used a pneumatic
press that was connected to a
pressure gauge to determine
the amount of pressure each
building gave way. He found
that there was little difference
in pressure to fail between a
16-inch spacing and a 12-inch
spacing while the latter is much
more expensive to build.
The state competition will
be held in Macon on April
22-24, at the Georgia State
FFA Convention.
School leaders say that
Cooper's nomination to inter
view for the Governor’s Honors
Program is part of a tradition at
JCCHS.
The JCCHS agriculture and
FFA program has a long his
tory of success in competitions
with area, state and national
winning teams in competitions
such as forestry, livestock eval
uation, agriculture sales and
more.
The program also has a rep
utation for producing quality
students in the area of science
and mathematics using real-
life problems that students may
have to solve in the future such
as dosing medicines for animals
or figuring the total amount of
volts that a 12-2 wire can carry
over a span of 200 feet.
For questions about the sci
ence fair or how to help prepare
the youth for their competi
tions, contact FFA advisor Jay
Borden at jborden@jackson.

JCCHS FFA team earns first place finish
TEAM TO COMPETE AT STATE EVENT
The agriculture marketing team from Jackson County
Comprehensive High School includes (L-R) Debra
Smith, Lorinda Moore and Taylor Graham. The team
recently earned a first place finish in a career develop
ment event and will compete in the state finals at the
state FFA convention in April.
A TEAM from Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School recently earned first
place in the Northeast Georgia
FFA Marketing Plan Career
Development Event (CDE).
The team will advance to
the state competition to be
held in April at the state FFA
convention in Macon.
The marketing team from
JCCHS — which includes
Debra Smith, Lorinda Moore
and Taylor Graham — chose
local beef producer and chap
ter alumni members. Ward
and Caroline Black's opera
tion to prepare a plan.
Ward began his beef pro
duction as a supervised agri
cultural experience project as
a freshman in high school.
When he graduated, custom
ers continued to call and ask
for locally grown, fresh beef
by the whole, half or quarter.
The JCCHS FFA market
ing team analyzed Harmony
Grove Farms, as it is called,
and developed a strategy to
help them increase their prof
its utilizing advertising and
management strategies.
The FFA Marketing Plan
CDE helps students practice
and sharpens skills in market
ing through the development
and presentation of a market
ing plan.
The plan may focus on the
introduction of a new agri
cultural product, supply or
service or on improving mar
keting of an existing product,
supply or service.
Each team competed
against teams in their region
for the privilege of participat
ing in the state event. The
state finals for the event is one
of many educational activities
at the state FFA convention in
which FFA members practice
the lessons taught in agricul
ture classes.
Jay Borden is the FFA advi
sor at JCCHS.
