JEFFERSON HIGH
School’s AFJROTC domi
nated the competition at the
Classic City Invitational Drill
Meet at Cedar Shoals High
School on February 20 taking
first place in the unarmed and
armed divisions.
“These cadets are focused
and determined to come out
on top,” said Chief Master
Sergeant Budell Willis, JHS
aerospace science instruc
tor. “They were up against
12 Army JROTC teams from
Northeast Georgia determined
to not let the Dragons come
out on top as they did the
previous week at the Jackson
County Invitational.”
The Dragon group had a
total of five first places, one
second place and one third
place.
The Color Guard team of
Clay Gooch, Lance Wilson,
Miguel Rodriguez and Andre
Gonzales had their third first
place finish of the year in the
Unarmed Color Guard event.
Gooch then led the Unarmed
Drill Team to a first place fin
ish, and in his first Varsity
Drill Meet, William Baldwin
led the Unarmed Squad Team
to a first place finish. This led
to the first place trophy in the
Unarmed Division.
“We swept the Division,”
Gooch said.
Milan Patel led the Armed
Drill Team to a first place fin
ish, which was the first time
a JHS Armed Drill Team fin
ished in the top spot.
In their first time competing
as a team, the team of Derrick
Alderson, Cassandra Slaby,
Mark Weaver, and Patel came
out on top in the Armed Color
Guard Competition.
The Armed Exhibition Drill
Team, led by Savannah Sloan,
finished second, which was the
first time an Armed Exhibition
Team had a “top 3” finish at a
drill meet. These finishes led
to the first place finish in the
Armed Drill Division.
The team of Miranda
Bellew, Juliann Watson,
Heather Simerly, and Maribel
Rodriguez took third in the
Female Color Guard Division.
“Once again, we are proud
of the way these cadets can
put on their ‘game faces’
and compete at an extremely
high level,” said Major Bryan
Watson.
In individual honors, Lance
Wilson picked up where Clay
Gooch left off last year, by tak
ing first in the Individual Drill
Routine Competition.
The Dragon group traveled
to the Air Force State Drill
Meet on March 6 for the next
competition.
PLACES SECOND
The Quiz Bowl team, which consisted of Brandon
Bullins, Dana Burzo, Daniel Navarro, and Sean Lee,
