Louise Allen died Saturday,
March 6, 2010, following an
extended illness.
Born in Athens, she was
the daughter of the late
James Billups and Hattie
Lou Fitzpatrick Smith. She
attended Faith Pentacostal
Holiness Church. Mrs. Allen
was preceded in death by her
husband, Carlton Allen.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Linda and
Ronnie Steed, Danielsville;
grandchildren, Jonathan
Steed, Ronnie Steed,
and Lindsey Steed, all of
Danielsville; sisters, Lorine
Privette, Comer, Mary Jean
Bray, Colbert, Annie Laura
(Allen) Scott, Carlton; a
brother, Edwin (Francis)
Smith, Carlton; and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday, March 8, from the
chapel of Lord & Stephens
Funeral Home with the Rev.

Burial was at Fitzpatrick
Smith Cemetery. Pallbearers

Syble Clark Allen, 87, died
Saturday, March 13, 2010.
Born in Jackson County,
she was the daughter of the
late Benjamin and Sonfonia
Massey Clark. She was a
homemaker and a member
of Rogers Baptist Church.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in
death by her husband of 60
years, Lord D. Allen.
Survivors include a
daughter and son-in-law,
Mary and Leon Litzpatrick,
Danielsville; granddaughter
and her husband, Christy
and Mitch Porterfield;
great-grandchildren, Mason
Porterfield and Connor
Porterfield; and a number of
other relatives.

& Stephens Madison Chapel
with the Revs. Wayne
Douglas, Johnny Thompson,

Sama officiating. Burial was
at Rogers Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Beatrice “Bea” Kelley Baird,
101, died Wednesday, March
10, 2010.
Born on August 13, 1908,
in Greene County, Tenn.,
she grew up in Chucky and
Greenville. She was preced
ed in death by her husband,
Ancil R. Baird Sr.; parents,
Homer Albert Kelley and
Leila Ellen frazier; brothers,
John Earl Kelley, Aubrey
Kelley; and a sister, Mary
Katherine Hamblin.
Survivors include children,
Richard Kelley Baird, Ann
Beatrice Baird and Ancil
Roscoe Baird Jr.; grandchil
dren, Cynthia Marie Horsley,
Richard Kelley Baird Jr.,
John Baird and Andrew Tice
Baird; and great-grandchil
dren, Allison Marie Horsley,
Michelle Elizabeth Horsley,
Rebecca Ann Horsley,
Rollins MacMillan Baird,
Reagan Grace Baird, Ian
Nicholas Baird and Sienna
Victoria Baird.
She lived in Knoxville,
Tenn., from 1938 until 2003,
when she moved to Georgia
to be closer to family.
She was a loving home
maker, caring mother, and
a faithful Christian mem
ber of first Baptist Church
Knoxville. She was skilled in
handwork (quilting, sewing,
crocheting, knitting), which
she continued to enjoy until
the last month of her life.
She delighted in giving her
handiwork to family, rela
tives, friends and the staff of
her assisted living center in
Jefferson.
The family would like to
extend a special heart-filled
thanks to the staff and nurs
es at the Bentley Assisted
Living Center in Jefferson
who through their kindness,
friendship and caring atten
tion made the last years of
her life enjoyable and full
of the laughs and smiles she
so enjoyed throughout her
long life.
Graveside services were
held friday, March 12, at
Greenwood Cemetery in
Knoxville, Tenn. Those
wishing to make a memo
rial remembrance gift may
do so by contributing to
the General fund of first
Baptist Church Knoxville,
Tenn., or to the building
fund of first Baptist Church
of Commerce. A memo
rial/remembrance service
was held at Bentley Assisted
Living at Northminister in
Jefferson on Wednesday,
March 17.

Blanton, 62, formerly of
Atlanta, died Monday, March
8, 2010.
She was born in Fulton
County, the daughter of the
late William Blanton Jr. and
Lucille N. Blanton. She was
a member of Atlanta First
Baptist Church. Mrs. Blanton
was preceded in death by a
special aunt, Pauline Blanton
Holden.
Survivors include a pater
nal aunt and uncle, Betty and
Reyno Petree, Winder; and
many cousins.
Graveside services were
held Thursday, March 11,
from the Blanton Family
cemetery in Talbot County
with the Rev. Dan Brown
officiating.

the daughter of the late Lee
Roy and Ruby L. Sharpton
Herndon. She was a member

er. Mrs. Buchanan was pre
ceded in death by her hus
band, John T. Buchanan; and
a daughter, Carol Smith.

and Jim Rainey Maughon;
sisters, Jewel Clack, Evalene
Brooks, and Burt Carter;

Mildred Runette Beard
Kirk Faulkner died Tuesday,
March 9, 2010, at her resi
dence.
Born in Danielsville on
August 26, 1927, she was the
daughter of the late Benj amin
and Hearlie Phillips Beard.
She was a retired seamstress
and of the Holiness Faith.
She was married twice, first
to the late David Chandler
Kirk, second to the late Ralph
Faulkner. Mrs. Faulkner
was preceded in death by
sisters, Avis Baxter, Clara
Baxter, Mary Sue Haley and
Margaret Kirk and broth
ers, Buck, Bill and Harold
Beard.
Survivors include a
son, Pete Kirk, Royston;
daughter, Becky Johnson,
Danielsville; stepson, Tom
Faulkner, Phoenix, Ariz.;
stepdaughters, Janice
Hubbard, Maysville, and
Mary Williams, Commerce;
four grandchildren; six great
grandchildren; and a special
friend, Irvin McElroy.

CORNELIA - Odis H.
Fleming, 94, died Sunday,
March 14,2010, at The Oaks
at Scenic View Rehabilitation
Center following an extend
ed illness.
Bom in Banks County on
September 14, 1915, he was
the son of the late Thomas
Grayson and Mary Gordon
Fleming and was the last sur
viving member of the imme
diate family. He was retired
as the owner and founder
of Fleming Foodservice. He
was the past-director of the
Georgia Wholesale Grocers
Association and was an avid
gardener. Mr. Fleming was a
member of the First Baptist
Church of Cornelia, where
he was named Deacon
Emeritus, was actively
involved in the Southern
Baptist Men’s Class and
was an avid participant with
Helping Hands Ministries.
Survivors include his
loving wife of 71 years,
Bernice Massey Fleming,
Cornelia; daughter and
son-in-law, Martha Anne
and Eli Dunagan, Mt. Airy;
son, Douglas Fleming,
Hollingsworth Community;
five grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren.

of Cornelia with the Revs.

Thomas Giles III
LULA - Thomas C. Giles
III, formerly of Oakridge,
Tenn., died Tuesday, March
9, 2010.
He was a graduate of
Georgia Tech, Class of 1973
and a tireless, dedicated
engineer traveling around
the world. He loved doing
anything outdoors from
hunting and fishing with his
sons to gardening on the
family farm. He was a loving
husband, father, grandfather,
brother, friend and a “Hell
of An Engineer," his family
stated.
Survivors include his wife
of 41 years, Glenda J. Giles;
sons and daughters-in-
law, Jeffrey Thomas Giles,
Lula, Bradley Allen and
Stephanie Giles, Holiday,

Barbara Beatty Groover, 83,

at Moses Cone Hospital.
Bom on April 22, 1926,
in Maysville, she was the
daughter of the late John A.
and Mattie Tolbert Beatty.
Mrs. Groover was preceded
in death by her husband, the
Rev. Howard H. Groover.
She attended Brenau
College in Gainesville and
Phillips University in Enid,
Okla. She was a member
of First Christian Church in
Greensboro, N.C., where her
husband served as Pastor for
many years. She was very
active in the Christian wom
en’s fellowship and various
other activities.

Nathan Jay

nessman Nathan Jay, 89,
died on
March
12, 2010,
after a
long ill
ness.
The son
of Harry
and Rose
Jay, he
was born
in Eatonton Dec. 20, 1920.
He was a Navy veteran of
World War II.
Mr. Jay lived most of his
adult life in Athens. He was
a merchant and owner of a
77-year-old family business,
Jay’s Department Store, in
Commerce. He had retired
and moved to Boca Raton,
Fla., 10 years ago with his
wife of 64 years, Annette.
Mr. Jay is survived by
his wife; a son, David Jay
and wife Barbara, of Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.; daugh
ter, Marsha and husband
Jon, of Greensboro, N.C.;
three grandchildren, Chan
Glazman, Athens, Ryan Jay,
Rocky Mount, N.C., and
Hilary Rieck and her hus
band John, Charleston, S.C.;
a great-granddaughter, Eva
Rieck, Charleston, S.C.; and
a sister, Gladys Pertschuk,
Boynton Beach, Fla. A sister,
Beatrice Gurkin, Rahway,
N.J., died earlier.
Mr. Jay was a longstand
ing member of Congregation
Children of Israel in Athens,
where he was a past presi
dent of the congregation.
He was also a member of
Temple Beth El in Boca
Raton; was a life governor
and past president of the
State of Georgia B’nai Brith;
and an International Hillel
Commissioner.
Mr. Jay was an active mem
ber of many civic organiza
tions such as the Commerce
Kiwanis Club and the cham
bers of commerce in Athens
and Commerce.
He was buried in Boca
Raton.
The family requests that

tribution to Hospice or the
charity of your choice.
