Electric vehicle rally set
JHS’s ‘Lucky Night Out’ fundraiser set for March 20
THE 13TH annual Georgia
Electric Vehicle Rally will be held
at Gresham Motorsports Park in
Jefferson on March 20.
The Georgia Electric Vehicle
Rally is a mix of competitions
planned to test teams’ and their
vehicles" abilities. The public is
invited to attend the rally events,
which begin at 8 a.m. Admission
is free and a concession stand will
be available.
The EV Education Program is
an ongoing education program
that includes students from many
disciplines, including math, auto
mechanics, physics, engineering,
electronics, journalism and other
classes. Throughout the year, stu
dents take part in a wide variety
of projects designed to increase
knowledge and awareness of
new alternative fuel systems. The
highlight of this project is the
construction of electric powered
vehicles by the students that they
can actually drive in the statewide
competition.
“Even with the financial cut
backs that schools have expe
rienced, teams of hard work
ing students have raised money
to participate in this important
event,’" said Electric Vehicle
Education spokesperson, Teddie
Lohmeier. “These dedicated stu
dents believe in their machines,
their teammates and the future of
green automotive transportation.’"
Though these EV competi
tions have been held in Georgia
since November 2000, this is first
time the event will take place
at the newly renovated Gresham
Motorsports Park. The Georgia
EV Rally demonstrates student
creativity and dedication to devel
oping environmentally respon
sible transportation alternatives.
Team members will test their
driving skills and the efficiency
of their student-built vehicles in
three driving events: acceleration,
autocross and range. Their under
standing of electric vehicle tech
nology will be tested in a trouble
shooting event and their public
speaking expertise in interesting
Oral Presentations. EV teams will
then have an opportunity to dem
onstrate their academic knowl
edge in a fast-moving Science
Quiz Bowl.
“What has impressed the
teachers who have participated
in the electric vehicle competi
tions has been the diversity of
interests that come together in
these team efforts,’" said Alan
Shedd, one of the founders of the
EV program. “We’ve had band
members, students who excel in
science math and physics as well
as students who have a natural
mechanical talent. The nature of
this kind of project forces them
to interact and work off of each
other’s strengths in order to solve
the problems that confront them.
But perhaps more importantly,
is that this program motivates
students to be excited about
learning and exploring, both in
an academic and in a hands-on
setting. It shows how real-world
applications of what is taught in
the classroom can accelerate the
learning process."’
Sponsors for the rally include
the Electric Vehicle Education
Program, Inc., Georgia Power
Company, Jackson Electric
Membership Corporation EV
Master, and the EV Club of the
South as well as the parents,
teachers and local businesses
from the communities of the
competing schools.
PREPARING FOR RALLY
Wally Smith acts as pit crew for driver, Melissa Skinner,
while one of the team sponsors, Mike Wingfield, super
vises.
