East Jackson defeats Walnut Grove
AFTER A rough start to the
week, the Lady Eagles of East
Jackson rebounded in strong
form.
The Lady Eagles started out
last Tuesday with a loss to
the Lady Tigers of Dawson
County, falling 4-1.
The lone win for East
Jackson came from Rebekah
Poponi and Jill Edmundson at
number two doubles.
The boys, meanwhile, also
lost to Dawson County, 3-2.
John Kesler won at num
ber one singles, while Tony
Johnson won at number two
singles.
Next was a trip to Walnut
Grove on Thursday. Things
went decidedly better for East
Jackson on this day, as the
Lady Eagles won 3-2.
Katherine Lee won at num
ber three singles. Ashley
Guest and Ansley Brooks
won at number one doubles.
Rebekah Poponi and Jill
Edmundson won at number
two doubles.
The boys were also victori
ous over Walnut Grove, win
ning 4-1
Tony Johnson won at num
ber two singles. Tsim Nuy Ly
won at number three singles.
Kevin Potts and Josh Clark
won at number one doubles.

Panthers take second at East Jackson
IT WAS a mixed result for the
Jackson County track and field
teams last week, as they took
part in a quad-meet at EJCHS.
The boys finished second
with 60 points, trailing only
top scoring East Jackson's
119.5. Franklin County finished
third with 47.5 points. Athens
Academy placed fourth with 19
points.
The girls came home with
a third place result, scoring 29
points to top-scoring Athens
Academy’s 80 and second place
East Jackson’s 67.
Individual results were not
available at press time.
Up next is a road trip, as
Jackson County will travel to
Oconee County to face Oconee
and Walnut Grove on Thursday.
Start time is scheduled for 4:30
p.m.
JCCHS GOLF
Gatlin won at number two
doubles.
On Tuesday, East Jackson
played host to Jefferson. It
wasn’t the match the teams
hoped for, as Jefferson swept
both the boys and the girls
5-0.
Up next is another home
stand, this time against Rabun
County on Thursday. Match
time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Panthers set new record with victory
LAST WEEK was a history
making one for the Jackson
County Panthers golf team.
They set a new school record
during last Wednesday’s match
at Double Oaks against East
Jackson and Banks County.
The Panthers won, shooting
a school record of 169, with
Banks County shooting a 210,
while East Jackson shot a 226.
The Panthers were led by
freshman Thomas Whitley.
Things didn’t go quite as well
the next day, as the Panthers
fell to Apalachee 177-172.
The loss didn’ t damper things
for coach Warren Standridge.
“We are having a great time
and our JV is winning as well,”
Standridge said.
On Tuesday, Jackson County
made some school history
by defeating Commerce and
Athens Academy.
With the win over CHS,
Jackson County has beaten
every team in the county for
the first time ever in the same
year.
“I am so proud of our men,”
said coach Warren Standridge.
Jackson County won by
shooting a 182 to Commerce's
185 and Athens Academy's
185.
The team was led by Jared
Scott and Brent VanFleet, who
both shot a 44.
The Jackson County girls also
came away with a win, shoot
ing a 106 to Athens Academy’s
112 and Commerce’s 125.
Beth Bates led Jackson
County, shooting a 51. Jessica
Stevens shot a 55.
Jackson County will play
host to North Oconee and
Apalachee at Traditions today
(Wednesday), beginning at 4
p.m.

The girls swept the Lady
Leopards, winning 5-0.

won at number two singles

McGarity won at number
three singles in sets of 6-1,
6-0. Taylor Bost and Tristan

(8), 6-2. Alison Salsman and
Erin Roberts won at number
two doubles in sets of 6-2,
6-2.
After seeing Monday's
match against Athens
Academy rained out Jefferson
traveled to Nicholson to face
East Jackson.
For the boys, it was a 5-0
sweep.

JHS GOLF
JHS defeats Commerce, Athens Christian
MARK IT down as another strong week for
the Jefferson golf teams.
Last Thursday, Jefferson traveled to Double
Oaks Golf Course in Commerce to face
Commerce and Athens Christian.
The boys came away with a victory, shoot
ing a 180 to Commerce’s 183 and Athens
Christian's 226.
Individually, Patrick Hilton led the Dragons
by shooting a 43. Michael Baker shot a 44.
Cutler Finch shot a 46. Austin Rowland shot
a 47.
“We are very pleased with the play of senior
Michael Baker and Cutler Finch along with
sophomore Patrick Hilton,” said coach Tom
Parker. “They have consistently played well
for Jefferson in the past couple weeks. We
look forward to working hard over the next
month as we prepare for the region tourna
ment in April.”
For the girls, it was Jefferson coming away
with the win, shooting a 101 to Commerce’s
130.
Hanna Chapman led the Lady Dragons by
shooting a 49. Brooke Whelchel shot a 52.
“The girls seem to be warming up with the
weather,” Parker said. “Sophomore Hanna
Chapman and senior Brooke Whelchel con
tinue to provide a steady round of golf each
time out. Freshman Anna Alexander contin
ues to impress us with her rapid development
along with sophomore Paige Pate and Junior
Kara Perry. The girls will have to continue to
lower their scores as they also set their eyes
on the April region tournament.”
On Tuesday, the Jefferson golf teams played
host to Madison County and Oglethorpe
County at Traditions.
The boys came away with the victory,
shooting a 179 to Oglethorpe's 179 and
Madison County’s 199.
Michael Baker led Jefferson, shooting a 46.
Patrick Hilton shot a 48. Nick Stowe shot a
48. Josh Flowers shot a 49.
The win improves the boys' record to 6-4.
The girls came up short, however, as they
shot a 109 to Madison County's 98.
Brooke Whelchel led the girls, shooting a
53. Hanna Chapman shot a 56.
The girls are now 3-2 on the season.
Up next, Jefferson will return to Double
Oaks to face off against Prince Avenue on
Thursday. Start time is scheduled for 3:30
p.m.
