WRESTLING
JEFFERSON WRESTLERS COMPETE IN STATE TOURNAMENT
The Big Kid State wrestling tournament took place on March 6 at Union Grove High
School in Fayetteville. Eleven 12U and 14U wrestlers qualified. Zach Rhymer earned
State Champion in 14U at 120 lbs. Nine 10U, 8U and 6U wrestlers qualified and Jacob
Crumley and Nicholas Holman earned State Champion gold medals.

TRI-COUNTY CHAMPS
The Jefferson Stars 10U Girls Basketball Team recently won the Tri-County
Championship held in Athens. Members of the team were, pictured left to right, front

JHS stadium to be closed during break
THE BASEBALL program at Jefferson High
School will be hosting its first “Dinner on the
Diamond” Sunday, April 18, at 7 p.m. to help
raise money for much needed field improve
ments.
Entertainment will be provided as well as
a silent auction of unique items. Guests will

enjoy a casual, fun-filled evening while dining
on the infield and being served by the baseball
players.
Tickets for the steak dinner are only $40 per
couple and may be obtained by calling 706-
202-4766. In case of inclement weather, din
ner will be served in the baseball field house.
SCHOOL OFFICIALS have announced that
the Jefferson High School stadium will be
closed to the public during the week of JHS’
spring break, beginning March 26.
The facility will be locked down to allow
work to take place on the track facility. Work
is expected to be completed by the end of
spring break.

Jefferson YBOA Basketball Shootout to be held
JEFFERSON YBOA will be holding its third
annual 3 on 3 Basketball Shootout on April 10 at
the Jefferson Recreation Center at 10 a.m.
Teams can be up to four players. Registration
is $40 per team in advance or $50 per team on
site. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
First place in the young adult division will get
$150, second place will $60 and third place $40.
Trophies will be given for first, second and third
place winners in the youth division. For entry
information, call Eddy Boseman at 706-351-

For the girls, Jeena Blackmon took top hon
ors in the shot put, setting a school record in
the process with a throw of 30’ 5 1/2”. Jessie
Harper finished first in the high jump. Amanda
Anderson placed first in the 800-meters.
Amanda Murphy took first in the 300-meter
hurdles.
“We are starting to learn how to become
competitive a little,” said coach Steve Collins.
“We still have a lot of moving around with the
boys and girls until we get them where they
need to be, but we have a good start.”
On Tuesday, East Jackson traveled to
Jefferson to take part in a tri-meet with
Jefferson and Oglethorpe County.
The boys came away with top honors, scor
ing 60 points to Jefferson’s 55 and Oglethorpe’s
55.
The girls, meanwhile, placed third with 31
points, trailing winner Jefferson’s 79 points
and second place Oglethorpe’s 54.
Up next for East Jackson is the Habersham
Invitational, to be held in Mt. Airy on
Saturday.
Sexton went 1-4 with two RBIs.
OGLETHORPE CO.
On Tuesday, the Dragons traveled to
Lexington to face the Patriots of Oglethorpe
County.
The Dragons took control from the start, put
ting three runners across in the top of the first
inning. The Patriots answered by putting two
runs of their own on the board in the bottom
of the inning.
Jefferson then proceeded to put one run
across in the top of the second, third, and
fourth, while keeping Oglethorpe from scoring
in each of those innings.
After Jefferson put their seventh run across
in the top of the fifth, the Patriots managed to
add one more to their tally in the bottom of
the inning.
Jefferson would keep Oglethorpe from scor
ing the rest of the night, and added one more
run to their total in the top of the seventh to
come away with an 8-3 victory.
Jamie Sexton recorded the win, giving up
three hits and three runs while striking out five
in five innings.
Kyle Hardy led at the plate, going 2-4 with
four RBIs. Conner Phillips went 2-4 with two
RBIs. Caleb Meet went 1-2 with one RBI.
With the win, Jefferson remains unbeaten at
5-0 in the region, and improves to 8-1 overall.

Panthers continued from IB
STEPHENS COUNTY
The Panthers returned home
on Friday to play host to the
Stephens County Indians.
After a scoreless first
inning, the Indians struck
first blood by scoring two
runners to take a 2-0 lead
in the top of the second.
Jackson County responded
immediately, scoring five
runs, including an RBI single
by Andy Williams. That was
followed by a double steal by
Quinn Grogan and pinch run
ner Jalen Banks that scored
Grogan. Rob Williams also
delivered a two RBI double.
Stephens County would
respond by scoring one run in
the top of the third. Jackson
County countered by scoring
two more in the bottom of the
inning, including an RBI by
Grogan, and another double
steal that scored pinch runner
Austin Gabriel.
The Indians again cut into
the lead by scoring three in
the fourth, making it 7-6, but
the Panthers added two more
runs of their own in the bot
tom of the inning to make
it 9-6.
Both teams went scoreless
in the fifth and sixth innings.
Stephens County looked to
make a late rally, scoring two
runners in the top of the sev
enth, but would get no closer,
as Jackson County won their
ninth game of the season,
9-8.
Austin Williams scored the
win, his fourth of the year.
“We had moments where we
looked really good,” Fountain
said. “Third baseman Ken
Miller made an unreal diving
stop to end one inning and
shortstop Rob Williams made
a great backhanded play to
end another inning.”
EASTSIDE
Up next was a trip to
Covington to face the Eastside
Eagles on Monday.
Things got off to a good
start for the Panthers, as they
moved out to a two-run lead
in the top of the first cour
tesy of a two RBI single from
Quinn Grogan.
The Eagles answered by
scoring one run in the bot
tom of the inning, then get
ting two more runs across in
the third and another in the
fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Things started to look bet
ter for Jackson County in
the top of the fifth. Andy
Williams walked, and was
followed by a two-run homer
by Kelly Moates to tie the
game 4-4.
Eastside would break the
tie quickly by adding two
more in the fifth to make it a
6-4 game.
Pitcher Ryan Shekey
worked a scoreless bottom
of the sixth, striking out two
in the process. The Panthers
threatened in the top of the
seventh, but would get no
closer, as Eastside won 6-4.
Shekey recorded the loss,
making him 1-1 on the sea
son.
