‘Ned’Archer
ATHENS - Charles "Ned’'
Archer, 89, died Thursday,
March 25, 2010.
A native of Jackson County,
the was the son of the late
Edward E. “Bud” and Annie
Lou Oliver Archer and was a
member of Redstone United
Methodist Church. Mr. Archer
earned two Bronze Stars while
serving his country during
WWII and was stationed in the
Philippines and
the New Guinea
Theater. He
was preceded in
death by his wife, Lessie Cheek
Archer; four sisters and five
brothers.
Survivors include a brother
and sister-in-law, Jack Oliver
and Virginia Archer, Nicholson;
sister-in-law, Florence Archer
Williams, Athens; and a number
of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, March 28 at Redstone
United Methodist Church
with the Revs. Steven Keller
and Doug Conwell officiating.
Burial was in the church cem
etery.

Sarah Carson

Sue Bennett Carson, 89, died
Saturday, March 27, 2010, at
BJC Nursing Home after an
extended illness.
Born in Athens, she was the
daughter of the late Charles
Lester and Eula Boggs Bennett.
Mrs. Carson was preceded in
death by her beloved husband
of 59 years, Clarence L. Carson;
brothers, Dr. Fred Bennett, Altus
Bennett, Curtis Bennett; and
sisters, Chloe Lumpkin Wiggins
and Elizabeth B. Dempsey.
Mrs. Carson was raised in
Madison, Ga., and graduated
from Madison High School, con
tinued her education at Georgia
State College for Women where
she received a bachelor of sci
ence in Home Economics, and
began her teaching career in
Home Economics at Swainsboro
High School and also taught for
two years at the Ila High School.
She took 12 years off to raise
three children and later renewed
her teaching certificate in the
field of elementary education at
the University of Georgia. The
remaining 26 years of teaching
were at Ila Elementary where
she taught seventh, fourth and
third grades. She earned her
master’s of elementary educa
tion, specialist in education
and certificate in supervision
at UGA. During her 30-year
teaching career she was a mem
ber of many education organi
zations and in 1963 was cho
sen as Teacher of the Year for
Ila Elementary. Mrs. Carson
touched the lives of many chil
dren who attended Ila as well
as the many student teachers
she mentored. She was a long
time member of Mt. Hermon
Presbyterian Church where
she served as church organist,
Sunday School teacher, held
various positions in the Women
of the Church, and assisted her
husband in the upkeep of the
church facilities and grounds.
Survivors include sons and
daughters-in-law, Charlie and
Judy Carson, Roanoke, Va., and
Ken and Jackie Carson, Athens;
daughter and son-in-law, Carol
and Dick Perpall, Danielsville;
grandchildren and spouses,
Scott and Carol Carson, Todd
and Nancy Carson, Michelle
and Duane Cole, Christy and
Shannon Murray, Suzanne and
Phillip Griffeth and Ryan and
Sara Perpall; seven great-grand
daughters; three great-grand
sons; and brothers, William

Compton, 76, died Monday,
March 29, 2010, at his resi
dence.
A native of Comer, he was
the son of the late Neal A. and
Jessie Lou Cooper Compton.
He was the owner and operator
of Tom Compton Trucking as a
dump truck driv
er. Throughout
his working
career, he was a
logger, bulldozer
operator, an all around heavy
machine operator and an air
plane pilot. He served his coun
try in the United States Air Force
during the Korean Conflict.

coaching baseball and was a

always be remembered for his
intelligence and love that he
showed to all that crossed his
path, loved ones stated. Mr.
Fallaw was preceded in death by
a sister, Phyllis Hartley; a niece,
Greta Price; and nephews. Jay
Carson and Barrett Taylor.

was a member of the Hoschton
Methodist Church. After gradu
ation from the University of
Georgia, she taught school in
Thompson, Georgia before
moving to Daytona Beach, Fla.,
in 1948, teaching school there
for 30 years, where she was a
member of Ormond Beach First
United Methodist Church. Amye
enjoyed caring for her home and
family, hiking in the mountains,
fishing, playing the piano, and
gardening. She collected reci
pes and was fond of cooking
and baking for her friends and
family. Mrs. Hawthorne was
preceded in death by a brother,
Hilliard L. Lott of Hoschton;
and sister, Frances Lott Willis of
Wildwood, Fla.
Survivors include her hus
band of 53 years, William R.
Hawthorne, Ormond Beach, Fla.;
a son, Thomas R. Hawthorne,
Guilford, Conn.; daughter, Amy

Melissa Fitzpatrick Kohler of
Winder. He was a graduate
of Winder-Barrow High School
- Brandon Ward
where he was a member of the
FFA, receiving many awards,
and a football player for WBHS.
He played baseball with the
Dixie Youth for eight years and
was the first person to receive
the Dixie Youth Sportsmanship
Award that was begun in 2003.
Mr. Kohler graduated from CDL
of Georgia in Winder, receiving
his CDL license, and drove a
truck for his family business,
Kohler South East Trucking
while waiting to be enlisted into
the Army. He was a member
of the New Pentecost United
Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to
his parents include grandpar
ents, John and Linda Kohler,
Lawrenceville, and Bill and
Carole Fitzpatrick, Lancaster,
Ky.; brothers, Jonathan Kohler,
Commerce and Peyton Kohler,

Mary’s Hospice House.
Born in Jackson County, he
was the son of the late Guy
Rueben and Woody Nellie Lou
Crisler McGinnis. He was a
member of Mt. Olive Baptist
Church, where he served as
a deacon and Sunday school
teacher for over 50 years. He
also served on numerous com
mittees in the church. He was a
retired brick mason and a mem
ber of Brick Layers Union #7,
was a retired Jackson County
bailiff, and was a member of
the Gideons International, hon
orary member of the Georgia
Sheriff’s Association and a
North Georgia College Alum.
Mr. McGinnis was preceded in
death by a son, John Darrell
McGinnis.
Survivors include his wife of
