‘Love of Lamas’ 4-H group brings home awards
WINS AWARDS AT LLAMA SHOW
The Jackson County 4-H “Love of Llamas” Youth Group brought home numerous
awards from the 2010 SSLA Hillbilly Hoedown Llama Show in Perry. Shown are:
Taylor Brown with Chelian’s Golden Pineapple, Heather Howell with Mr. Outback,
Hali Sauls with STAMF Mr. Sandman, Brook Nelms with NWLF’s Masked Man,
Brooke Bullock with Chelian’s Sterling Advantage, Caroline Flynn with Cyber Kruze
ABSR, Cody Frady with Chelian’s Ray-Beck Warrior and Alii Whaley with Atlanta’s
Jerry.

“Love of Llamas” Youth
Group attended the 2010
SSLA Hillbilly Hoedown
Llama Show in Perry on
February 26-28.
Those attending the event
were: Taylor Brown, Brook
Nelms, Caroline Flynn, Hali
Sauls, Heather Howell, Cody
Frady, Brooke Bullock and
Alii Whaley.
The Hillbilly Hoedown
was a Double Point show.
This means that there is one
competition with two judges,
thus two places are given in
each division of competi
tion.
Alii Whaley competed in
the Youth Senior Division
for pack and she won two
third places. In the obsta
cle category, she won two
third places and for public
relations, she won two third
places. In showmanship, she
won two second places.
Competing in the
Intermediate Division were:
•Taylor Brown won a first
and second place for pack.
She won two first places for
obstacle and she won two
fourth places for public rela
tions. Taylor won the inter
mediate youth performance
grand champion. Taylor also
placed second and third in
showmanship.
•Brooke Bullock won a
first and second place for
pack. She won second and
fourth places for obstacle;
fifth and sixth places for
public relations; and fourth
and fifth in showmanship.
•Caroline Flynn won a third
and fifth place for pack. She
also won two third places for
public relations and two first
places in showmanship.
•Hali Sauls won a fourth
and fifth place for pack;
second and sixth places for
obstacle and second and
third in showmanship.
•Cody Frady won two
sixth places for pack. He
also won third and fourth
places for obstacle and won
first and second places for
public relations. Cody also
won the intermediate youth
reserve performance cham
pion and placed fifth and
sixth in showmanship
Competing in the Junior
Youth Division were:
•Brook Nelms won two
first places for pack. She
also won two third places
for obstacle and two second
places for public relations.
Brook won the junior youth
reserve performance cham
pion.
•Heather Howell won two
second places for pack, two
second places for obstacles,
two third places for pub
lic relations and two second
places for showmanship.
HONORED AT MILITARY BALL
The East Jackson Comprehensive High School ROTC
Military Ball was held at the Jefferson Civic Center
on Saturday, March 27. The American Legion Military
Excellence Awards and Certificates are presented
annually to one female and one male cadet at the high
school for military and scholastic excellence. The stu
dent must be in the top 20 percent of the junior ROTC
and academic classes. The recipient must possess and
have demonstrated quality of leadership related to stu
dent activities and organizations. The recipient must
have knowledge of ROTC missions and requirements
and possess excellent student leadership skills. The
recipient must have the desire and have demonstrated
the ability to help others. The female recipient of the
American Military Excellence Award for this year is
Cadet 1st Lt. Brittany Packard. The male recipient is
Cadet 1st Sgt. Ronnie Slizewski. Shown left to right:

DRAGON AWARD WINNERS
Dragon Award winners at Jefferson Elementary School
for the week of March 22 were: (front) Macy Beddow,
Jyesha Butts, Gabe Sealock, Cannon McKinney and
Bailey Ramey; and (back) Tellius Fitch, Brady Frazier,
Caroline Kinsey and Maya Jarrar.
EASTER BUNNY VISITS NJES
April Stephenson’s and Mary Ludeman’s Pre-K class at
North Jackson Elementary School had a visitor to visit
prior to their Easter egg hunt. The children found lots of
eggs and enjoyed seeing the Easter Bunny.
JHS STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO SPANISH
HONOR SOCIETY
Six Jefferson High School students were recently
inducted into the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, a
Spanish Honor Society that recognizes high student
achievement in Spanish and Portuguese. Students who
maintained an A average in the honors Spanish 3 were
invited to join. At graduation, seniors will receive an
extra seal on their diploma. The new members are (L-R):
Lauren Van Sloun, Christian Keel, Blair Buffington,
Noah McCarthy, Madyson McKinney and Kayla Adams.

FCCLA STATE WINNERS
East Jackson Middle School FCCLA members,
Reagan Robach and Jessica Compton, competed
at the State S.T.A.R. Events Competition in Athens
at the Classic Center. These students competed in
the Chapter Service Project Display event, where
members chose one community service project and
highlighted it. They created a display board and a
10-minute speech about bullying in schools. These
two members competed against other regional win
ners and won for their category, qualifying them
for the National STAR Events Competition held in
Chicago, III., this summer. For their project, they
hosted a non-bullying pledge at East Jackson
Elementary School and worked with first - fifth
graders in the After School Program teaching them
about the serious effects of bullying. Members part
nered with the US Department of Health and Human
Services and used the peer educational program,
Stop Bullying Now. Elementary students learned
about bullying through watching bullying cartoon
episodes and played interactive games, which were
all on the Stop Bullying Now website. The elemen
tary kids also took part in a non-bullying pledge
to help prevent bullying at their school. Students
were also given a non-bullying flyer to take home to
remind them of the effects of bullying.
