JHS ROTC has strong finish at national drill meet
ROTC HAS STRONG FINISH
The Jefferson High School AFJROTC Drill Team traveled to Macon, Friday, March
19, and had three “top” finishes at the Air Force National Eastern JROTC Drill

NJES SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS
North Jackson Elementary School recently hosted its
third annual science fair in conjunction with Science
Night. The school winners were (back row): Davey
Turner, Avery Crump, Tiffany Savage and Chandler
Barkley; and (front row) Allianne Clark, Tanner Crump,
Drew Ray and Rachel Hardegree. The first place win
ners participated in the Jackson County Elementary
Science Fair hosted by East Jackson Comprehensive
High School on March 16.
Hester awarded scholarship
THE JEFFERSON High
School AFJROTC Drill Team
traveled to Macon, Friday.

In their second year of
competing at the national
level, the Dragon Group
improved over last year’s
third place finish in one
category. The Drill Team
of Timmy Warren. Derrick
Alderson. Lance Wilson,
Miranda Bellew, Amber
Simerly, Mark Weaver,
Juliann Watson. Andre
Gonzales, Miguel Rodriguez,
Maribel Rodriguez, Carlos
Mendoza, Milan Patel, and
Clay Gooch ( team command
er) placed third in Unarmed
Drill and fourth in Unarmed
Inspection.
“When we left the drill
floor, I knew we did great,”
said Miguel Rodriguez.
Clay Gooch placed sec
ond in the Commander's
Competition in a close finish.
The commander from North
Mecklenburg High School,
North Carolina edged Gooch
out for top honors by just
three points.
“When we compete at this
level, placing in a couple
of categories, demonstrates
that we have a dedicated,
‘hard working’ group of
young men and women,”
stated Chief Master Sergeant
Budell Willis, team coach.
“We held our own and then
some against the best teams
from the Eastern United
States.”
“They know who Jefferson
is now,” stated Miranda
Bellew, one of seven senior
team members.
Mayor Bryan Watson said,
“We left Macon with people
knowing that we are a good
team. We’re proud of the per
formance of the seniors, and
real happy that they had a
great finish at the Nationals.
I am also extremely proud of
the parents that have made
these long trips to support
the cadets. Many times this
year, we have been com
plimented on the parental
support we have. We would
like to invite the public to
drop in anytime at the JHS
AFJROTC building and see
what these young men and
women have accomplished
this year.”
The Dragon Group will be
heading to Daytona Beach
on May 1 to compete at the
Joint National Drill Meet.
A JEFFERSON High School
student has been awarded a
$2,500 National Achievement
Scholarship.
Marcayla N. Hester received
the scholarship and plans a
career in biomedical engineer
ing.
The National Merit
Corporation recently announced
a list of 800 black American
high school students who have
been awarded an Achievement
Scholarship through the
National Achievement
Scholarship Program.
The National Achievement
Scholarship Program is a pri
vately-financed academic com
petition to honor scholastically
talented black American youth,
and to provide scholarships.
Letters sought for Jefferson 2010 graduates
THE SENIORS of
Jefferson High School will
be honored at a Senior
Breakfast on May 20.
Part of the activities this
year at the senior breakfast
will be the presentation of
letters written especially
to them from their parents,
teachers, family, coaches,
youth ministers and friends.
Organizers are collecting
notes to congratulate the stu
dents on their achievement
or to remember a special
moment of their years grow
ing up.
Anyone who know a JHS
senior and would like to
write them a letter is asked
to: Enclose the letter in an
envelope with the first and
last name of the student;
mark the envelope: Attention
School Council - Senior
Letter; and drop the letter
off at the high school or mail
to 575 Washington Street.

Newspaper accepting home-schooled grads
MAINSTREET Newspapers
Inc. — which includes The
Jackson Herald, The Commerce
News and The Banks County
News - is now accepting photos
of graduating home-schooled
students for its annual gradua
tion section.
The graduation section will
feature local high school gradu
ates and will be published
Wednesday, May 19.
The deadline for submit
ting photos of home-schooled
graduates is Wednesday, May
5. at noon. Absolutely no pho
tos will be accepted past the
deadline. The home-schooled
student must live in Jackson or
Banks counties.
Photos should be clear and
in focus. Photos of poor qual
ity - such as those printed on
computer paper - may not be
published. The photo should
contain the student’s first, mid
dle and last names, along with
the city of their residence and
a contact phone number (which
will not be published). A for
mal photo is preferred, but not
required.
Digital photos with at least
150 dpi may be e-mailed to
news@mainstreetnews.com.
Photos may also be deliv
ered to The Jackson Herald
office in Jefferson. The Banks
County News office in Homer
or The Commerce News office
in Commerce.
