Panthers host East Jackson Thursday
THE JACKSON County Panthers returned
to action Monday, as they faced off against
Dawson County.
It wasn't the match that the Panthers had
hoped for, as they lost 162-176. Coach Warren
Standridge said that Ben Waldrip, Brent
VanFleet and Thomas Whitley all played well
in the match.
The loss leaves the Panthers 11-5-1 for
the year. They will next face off against
East Jackson and East Hall at Traditions on
Thursday for senior night.
EJCHS TRACK AND FIELD
East Jackson improves during season
WITH THE season behind
them, the East Jackson ten
nis teams can look back
at another season that saw
improvement on a growing
program.
Despite not making the
region tournament, as 8AA
only transfers the top three
teams from each sub-region,
the East Jackson tennis pro
gram continued to grow dur
ing the 2010 season.
The boys saw several vic
tories as a team, including
two wins over in-county rival
Jackson County, along with
wins over Banks County and
Walnut Grove.
The girls continued to see
their portion of the program
grow as well while bringing
home a victory over Walnut
Grove in the second part of
the season.

East Jackson hosts JCCHS Thursday
AFTER CATCHING their breath over spring
break, the East Jackson golf teams will return
to action this week.
The Eagles and the Lady Eagles will return
to action against Jackson County on April 15
at Traditions. That will be followed by the
beginning of Region play, which will start on
Monday, April 19 at Traditions.
SMOTHERS SIGNS WITH WABASH
JCCHS senior Charles Smothers signed Monday to play football and compete in
track and field for Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Smothers, a three-year
varsity letter winner for the JCCHS football team, recorded six sacks on defense in
’09 and rushed for 482 yards and four touchdowns on offense. Smothers is also a
three-time letterman in track and field, participating in the 100 and 200-meter dashes,
as well as being part of the 400-meter relay team that set a new school record earlier
this season. Pictured are, left to right, front row, mother Shara Spry, Smothers, father

JHS boys netters defeat Athens Academy
FOR THE first time in many
years — perhaps ever — the
Jefferson High School boys’
tennis team defeated rival
Athens Academy Tuesday
afternoon.
The boys won 3-2 with the
Number Two doubles clinching
the winning match.
Also winning were Number
One singles Zack Bost and
Number Two singles Blair
Buffington.
Although the two teams are
now in different divisions, for
many years they competed in
the same region. While rivals
in other sports as well, the ten
nis rivalry has grown in recent
years as many players from both
teams train together and play
USTA tournaments together.
In girls' play, the JHS team
wasn’t as lucky as the team lost
to a strong Athens contingent
0-5.
Now Jefferson turns its atten
tion to the region tournament,
which begins Thursday at North
Oconee.
