JHS BOYS TENNIS
EAST JACKSON played
host this week to the 8-AA
girls region meet, which was
pushed back to Monday due
to Saturday’s wet weather.
In the opening round of
the meet, East Jackson tied
for third with Rabun County,
with both teams scoring 29
points. North Oconee led
after day one with 95 points,
with Jefferson in second with
52.5 points. Dawson County,
Walnut Grove, Oglethorpe
County, Fannin County and
Banks County followed.
Monday saw the completion
of all the field events and the
1600-meters. The finals in the
track events will be held today
(Wednesday) at East Jackson.
On Monday, Malika DuBose
took first in the first flight of
the shot put. Carissa Raylee
placed fourth in the high
jump. Brooklyn Watkins tied
for second in the pole vault.
Courtney McDowell placed
sixth in the 1600-meters.
Watkins qualified for
Wednesday's finals in the
100-meter hurdles with a third
place finish in her heat. Other
qualifiers included Amanda
Murphy in the 100-meter
hurdles, Amanda Anderson
in the 800-meters, Courtney
McDowell in the 3200-meters
and Carly Caswell in the
3200-meters.
The team of Bralee Griffin,
Mariah Baird, Brooklyn
Watkins and Amanda Murphy
qualified for Tuesday’s finals
in the 4x100.
JCCHS TRACK AND FIELD
Lady Panthers place ninth at region
AFTER BEING delayed
this week due to rain, the
Jackson County girls track
team were hoping for good
results from their region
meet at Oconee County High
School. The first day of the
meet was delayed to Monday
due to Saturday’s wet weath
er.
The Lady Panthers came
away with a ninth place effort,
scoring 16.5 points. Region
champion Eastside scored 134
points, followed by Oconee
County, Elbert County, Hart
County, Stephens County,
Archer, Franklin County and
Mountain View. Morgan
County was the only team to
trail Jackson County.
Jackson County’s Brittany
Aikens came away with a first
place for Jackson County, win
ning in the 3,200-meters and
with third in the 1600-meters.
Christa Beth Vaughn tied for
sixth in the high jump.
The state track meet is slat
ed for May 6-8 in Albany.

Jefferson netters best Bulldogs
THE JEFFERSON Dragons boys tennis
team has made their first step forward in state
tournament play, defeating Macon County 5-0
in round one to move on to round two.
The Dragons defeated the Bulldogs in 44
minutes, with Zach Bost, Blair Buffington,
JHS GIRLS GOLF
Ben Daniels, and the doubles teams of Matt
Buchanan, Aaron Martin, Trevor Castellaw and
Cason Thurmond all recording 6-0, 6-0 scores.
The boys will now prepare to face Greater
Atlanta Christian at home today (Wednesday).
Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Lady Dragons set for state competition
THE REGION champion
Jefferson Lady Dragons golf
team is gearing up for state
competition next week.
Last week, the Lady Dragons
beat Dawson County 190 to 209
for the region title, also beat
ing out Banks County, Rabun
County, East Jackson, Walnut
Grove and North Oconee.
Sophomore Hanna Chapman
led Jefferson by shooting a 93,
with senior Brooke Whelchel
shooting a 97.
The Lady Dragons will
begin state tournament play
on Monday, May 3 at the
Alpharetta Athletic Club.
