Lady Dragons fall to Calhoun

Panthers take second at Jefferson
THE JACKSON County boys track team came
home with a second place result from a tri-meet
with Jefferson and Commerce at JHS Tuesday.
The Panthers scored 53 points to winner
Jefferson’s 84.5. Commerce trailed both teams,
scoring 31.5 points.
Winners included Charles Smothers in the
long jump, Peter Thao in the 800-meters. Zane
Cochran in the 200-meters and D.J. Ledford in
the 3200-meters.
The 4x100 relay team of Cochran, Darien
Rollins. Jonathan Holton and Smothers also
won.
Others placing included Jordan Perez in the
shot put and discus, Robert Stephens in the shot
put, Dustin Scott in the triple jump and Daivon
Ledford in the 300-meter hurdles.
Up next for the Panthers is the boys region
meet, being held Lriday through Monday at
JCCHS.
A WIN in the first round of state playoff
action advanced the Lady Dragons netters to
the second round of state playoff this week.
The Lady Dragons won 5-0 over Pike
County. Bell Blakenship won 6-1, 6-0 at
number one singles. Maggie Broome won
6-3. 6-1 at number two singles. Miranda
McGarity won 6-1, 6-1 at number three
singles.
The team of Tristan McGarity and Taylor
Bost won 6-2, 6-3 at number one doubles.
Alison Salsman and Savannah Howard won
6-0, 6-1 at number two doubles.
Up next the Lady Dragons played host to
Calhoun. That's where their season came to
an end, as they lost 0-3. Bell Blankenship was
winning 6-1, 4-4 when heavy rains caused the
rest of play to be called off. The number one
doubles team of Tristan McGarity and Taylor
Bost was also still on the courts, but was los
ing 4-6, 3-4 when play was called.
The girls finished their season as the region
runner-up, with an 11-4 record. Three seniors
played in region championship matches all
four years, winning two.
This year’s sweet 16 finish marks the sixth
straight season the girls have at least made the
round of 16.

Jefferson takes
THE JEFLERSON boys track team came
out on top of a tri-meet Tuesday with Jackson
County and Commerce.
The Dragons scored 84.5 points to Jackson
County’s 53 and Commerce’s 31.5.
Event winners in the meet include Josh Kies
in the shot put and discus, Derrick Perkins in
the triple jump and 300-meter hurdles, Tyler
Porter in the pole vault and Noah McCarthy in
first in tri-meet
the high jump.
Several other athletes recorded personal or
season best performances in the meet includ
ing Shaquille Maxey in the triple jump, Tyler
Porter in the long jump, Noah McCarthy
in the long jump and Matt Deremer in the
1600-meters and 3200-meters.
Up next for the boys is their region meet, to
be held at Jefferson Saturday and Monday.
