Items stolen from facility among incidents reported
A RIDING lawnmower and a trail
er parked outside at the Hoschton
Wastewater Treatment Plant were sto
len, according to the Jackson County
Sheriff's Office.
An employee of the Jackson County
Water and Sewerage Authority — which
operates and maintains Hoschton’s
facility — said someone cut a chain
securing a gate at the plant on Nancy
Industrial Blvd. sometime between
11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 25, and 11
a.m. on Monday, April 26.
Once inside the facility, a riding
lawn mower and trailer parked at the
wastewater treatment plant were stolen,
according to an incident report. It also
appeared that a fuse box on a trac
tor was tampered with, possibly in an
attempt to hot wire it.
The stolen items were valued
at $7,500, according to an incident
report.
OTHER INCIDENTS
Other incidents reported to the sher
iff's office last week included:
•dispute at an Ednaville Place,
Braselton, address, where a man said
he went to a nearby property to get a
couple of wheelbarrows full of mulch.
A property owner said the man could
get the mulch, the man said. While
getting loads of mulch, another man at
the property threatened the man with a
stick and hit him in the chest because he
was getting too much mulch. The sec
ond man later told a deputy that he just
ran the first man off his property.
•threats by phone at a Dumar Lane,
Hoschton, address, where a woman said
she had received harassing phone calls
and threats from her brother. The broth
er was harassing the woman because
she wouldn’t allow him to charge gaso
line in her name at a local convenience
store, the woman's husband said. The
husband also noticed the brother near
their residence and he quickly drove
away. After leaving the residence, the
brother called the woman and threat
ened to beat up the husband.
•burglary at a Downing Road,
Hoschton, address, where a man said
when he returned to his house, a base
ment door was open. The man noticed
that his dressers had been open and
jewelry boxes thrown on a bed. The
man found his pistol, loaded it and
cleared his house of any potential sus
pects. A fireproof safe was stolen. The
stolen items were valued at $1,975. A
neighbor reported seeing several suspi
cious teenagers or young adults near the
man’s house.
•burglary at a Murphy Road, Braselton,
address, where a woman said someone
entered her house and ransacked it
while she was out of town. The sus
pects entered the residence through a
basement door. The stolen items were
valued at $900, although the woman
believed that more items were taken.
•burglary at a Jackson Trail Road,
Hoschton, address, where a man said
when he arrived home, the front door
of the residence was partially open.
The man said it appeared that someone
kicked open the door, but didn't take
anything from the residence. The man
said it was possible that the suspect was
frightened away by an audible alarm in
the residence.
•entering an auto at a Poplar Springs
Drive, Hoschton, address, where
a woman said someone entered her
unlocked pick-up truck and stole a
garage door opener. The woman was
also concerned that someone was tam
pering with her phone lines. A deputy
checked the phone wires, which were
OK.
•motor vehicle theft at a Winder
Highway, Jefferson, address, where
a woman said a 1988 Toyota Land
Cruiser was stolen. The vehicle had
been parked at the property for several
years, and the air pressure in all of the
tires was low and the battery removed.
There were no tire marks in the yard,
indicating that the vehicle was towed
from the property. A deputy checked
with area gas stations to see if any
one may have tried to get fuel for the
vehicle.
•domestic dispute at a Ford Road,
Jefferson, residence where a woman
said her boyfriend broke out the win
dows of her vehicle.

Wirthman joins effort to end violence against women
CHIEF JOSEPH Wirthman has been chosen as one of 24
law enforcement executives from across the country to par
ticipate in a National Law Enforcement Leadership Institute
on Violence Against Women hosted by The International
Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
Through the Institute experience, IACP intends to raise the
response to violence against women crimes higher on law
enforcement’s agenda and support the adoption of best prac
tices by the officers in the Jefferson Police Department.
During the three-day Institute taking place in Philadelphia,
Penn., Chief Wirthman, along with the other selected par
ticipants, will explore innovative approaches for investigat
ing crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking
and human trafficking. Additional attention will center on
assessing agency performance and sharing challenges and
solutions with law enforcement colleagues.
In an effort to help law enforcement agencies enhance their
response to crimes of violence against women, the Institute
will focus on planning and methods for effective resource
allocation to help crime victims and hold perpetrators
accountable. The participating law enforcement executives
will be engaged in the development of action plans through
out the Institute in order to adopt new strategies for proactive
coordinated community collaboration upon returning to their
department.
Expenses for participants to attend the Institute are covered
under a grant to the IACP from the United States Department
of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women.
