Two Lady Dragons perform at state
THE JEFFERSON Lady Dragons track and
field team had two qualifiers for last week
end’s state meet in Albany.
Kasey McDonald made the trip after plac
ing in the discus and the shot put, while Holly
Baron qualified in the 200-meter dash.
EJCHS TRACK AND FIELD
Both made respective showings against
tough competition in Albany. McDonald
came home with a ninth place showing in
discus and a tenth place in the shot put.
Baron recorded a 16th place effort in the
200-meters.
Two Eagles to compete at state meet
TWO MEMBERS of the East Jackson Eagles
track and field team are set to compete in the
boys state meet, to be held beginning Thursday
at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.
Nick Fulks recorded a second place result
in discus at the recent region competition to
qualify for the state meet, while a second place
by Brandon Banks in the 800-meters sent him
as well.
The state meet will run through Saturday.

Five Dragons prepare for state meet
JHS continued from IB
Five members of the Jefferson Dragons boys
track and field team are getting ready for this
weekend’s state meet at Jefferson.
Tyler Porter qualified with a first place effort
in the pole vault. Also advancing off of a first
place effort was Josh Kies in the discus and in the
shot put. Derrick Perkins won in the 110-meter
hurdles and placed second in the pole vault.
Sky Porter moved on to state with a second
place in the pole vault. Derrick Perkins placed
second in the triple jump to move on.
The state meet gets underway Thursday, run
ning through Saturday at Memorial Stadium in
Jefferson.
loss of Tyler Porter and Sky Porter.
“We’ve got some really good players last year
that aren’t back, along with good linemen that
aren’t back,” McFerrin said. “You’ve always got
that at graduation. We’re just trying to get other
people to step up now.”
With that in mind, McFerrin said that makes
practice over the summer a key for his team.
“We’ve got to get more done in the summer
than we "re getting done now,” he said. “That’s
hard to do because you can’t put pads on. We’ve
got to do a lot of teaching this summer because
there will be new guys in there that didn’t play a
lot last year.”
Regardless of the losses and the players miss
ing from the practice field right now, McFerrin
-ing on the ten-run rule. In the end, Jefferson
won 11-1 in six innings.
Jamie Sexton picked up the win, giving up
two hits and no runs while striking out eight
in five innings.
said he feels like he has some talented players
moving up this season.
“We’ve got some good sophomores who will
get a chance to play, and even some freshmen.
We’ll work hard in the summer.”
Practice is slated to wrap up next Tuesday,
but the team will be unable to practice from
Thursday through Saturday due to the state track
meet being held at Memorial Stadium.
With final exams scheduled for next Wednesday,
that means the Dragons will get only nine days of
spring practice rather than the usual 10.
But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about
the Jefferson organization over the years, it’s
that they respond to nothing better than a good
challenge.
Sexton also led at the plate, going 2-4
with two RBIs. Jason Demos went 1-4 with
two RBIs. Andrew Bartek went 1-1 with a
homerun. Jake Fields went 2-3. Drew Carson
went 1-3.
Panthers continued from IB
Dragons continued from IB
“We’re young, but these kids don’t know any
thing different but to go full speed,” Kirk said.
“That’s what’s fun to watch.”
Kirk said the current excitement level is a great
thing to work with.
“The kids who are here now didn’t lose in
middle school, they didn’t lose in JV last year,
and they’re not used (to losing),” he said. “The
kids that we had last year were kind of the tail
end of the beat down group that never won here.
The group we have here now don’t know any
thing but to go 100 miles an hour.”
Kirk said that is a great thing for him and for
his coaching staff.
“We love coaching them, we love teaching
them, and we love their excitement and enthu
siasm,” he said. “Right now, if we tell them to
go break down a brick wall, they’re going to try
to do it if they think it will help them win a ball
game.”
Kirk said that is a big advantage as the Panthers
move from AAA to AA this season.
“For us to be where we’re at in AA, we’ve
played the big boys for three years now. I don’t
mean any disrespect, but when you’re lining up
against Eastside, there’s a difference between
lining up against them and lining up against
Dawson County. There’s a difference between
lining up against Stephens County and Rabun
County. There’s a difference, I’m sorry.”
Kirk said for his team, he feels the move is
definitely a benefit.
“I’ve got a couple of freshmen that can play.
I’ve got a couple of sophomores that will start.
For us, I think it’s nothing but a benefit for us in
every aspect of the game. When you’ve got 93
kids out, you’re going to lose 10 or 15 to attrition.
But if I lose 20, I’ve still got 73 to pull from.”
Kirk said that right now, they are trying to fill
some holes left by graduating players.
“We’ve had some kids step up in a big way this
spring. It’s a culmination of a lot of stuff. My
coaches have worked their butts off in the off
season. We’re playing two AAA teams to start
with, so we’re trying to step our game up a little
bit to get ready for our region schedule.”
Practice continues this week, with the spring
game scheduled for Saturday night.
