Counterfeit purses seized from flea market vendor
MORE THAN 100 counterfeit purses and accessories were
taken from a vendor at a flea market in Jefferson, according to
an incident report filed at the Jefferson Police Department.
Other incidents reported recently by the police department
include the following:
•loud music and noise at a Sycamore Street business.
•attempted burglary at a Storey Porter Road residence when a
woman heard someone trying to break into her basement.
•attempted break-in at a Brooklyn Chase apartment when a
woman saw marks on her door where someone had tried to get
inside.
•two juveniles “messing with’’ storage containers behind a
business on the bypass.
•a man at a New Salem Church Road location said he fired an
employee who later made threatening remarks to him.
•a woman said her husband is violating a court order in refer
ence to custody and visitation.
•theft at an Athens Street business.
•woman attempting to pass counterfeit money at a Hwy. 129
location.
•4-year-old accidentally hit with a baseball bat by a 10-year-
old child.
•a man said a tree limb fell on his vehicle and damaged it.
•prowler at a Washington Street residence.
•property damage at a Hamilton Drive address.
•gas drive-off at a convenience store.
•fight between two men at a Jefferson bar.
•a man came to the fire station and asked to use the bathroom
and then stole two shirts from lockers inside the building,
•threats made at a Hwy. 129 business.
DMVS report recent arrest
THE DEPARTMENT of
Motor Vehicle Safety made
the following arrest in Jackson
County last week:
•John Lincoln Campbell,
59, 1050 Campbell Drive,
Athens, suspended commer
cial driver’s license.
Two fires reported last week
FIRES WERE reported at a
business and a barn last week
in Jackson County.
On May 5, units from
Commerce, Maysville,
Nicholson and the Jackson
County Correctional Institute
fire departments responded
to 3490 Maysville Road,
Commerce, on a reported
structure fire. Upon arrival,
units found a commercial
building with light smoke
showing. The fire was quickly
extinguished and contained to
the area of origin. No injuries
were reported and only minor
damage occurred. The fire was
listed as accidental.
Also on May 5, units
from Harrisburg, Jefferson,
Nicholson and the Jackson
County Correctional Institute
fire departments responded
to 796 Y Z Sailors Road,
Jefferson, on a reported struc
ture fire. Upon arrival, they
found a barn filled with hay
fully involved. The barn was
a total loss, no injuries were
reported and the cause is listed
as accidental.

Chief Wirthman joins effort
JEFFERSON police chief
Joseph Wirthman has been
chosen as one of 24 law
enforcement officers from
across the country to par
ticipate in the National Law
Enforcement Leadership
Institute on Violence Against
Women. The event is host
ed by the International
Association of Chiefs of
Police.
The goal is to raise the
response to violence against
women higher on law enforce
ment officer’s agendas and to
support the adoption of best
practices by officers of the
police department.
During the three-day con
ference in Philadelphia, Pa.,
the participants will explore
innovative approaches to
investigating crimes of
domestic violence, sexual
assault, stalking and human
trafficking.
Expenses for participants
to attend are covered under a
grant from the United States
Department of Justice’s office
on violence against women.
COMPLETES LAW TRAINING
Mandy O’Kelley graduated from the Northeast Georgia
Police Academy on April 30, 2010. O’Kelley partici
pated in the 10-week, 408-hour Basic Law Enforcement
Training course as required by the Georgia Peace
Officer Standards and Training Council. The course
provides instruction in the areas of criminal justice,
criminal law, constitutional law, community relations,
modern police procedures, firearms, emergency vehicle
operations, and first aid training. O’Kelley is employed
by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. She is shown
with Sheriff Stan Evans.
