EMS week going on now
Jackson Co.
JACKSON County
Emergency Services is cel
ebrating National EMS week
May 17 - 22.
“During this time, we honor
and salute our staff of dedicat
ed paramedics and emergency
medical technicians,” said
EMS director Steve Nichols.
“Our personnel respond to
every type of emergency that
you could imagine, heart
attack, stroke , multiple vehi
cle accidents, gunshot wounds
and even obstetrical emergen
cies where delivery is immi
nent, just to name a few. They
do this 24/7 365 days a year.
This week we want to recog-
Orthodontist
nize them for the life saving
service they provide to our
community.”
Jackson County has a full
time staff of 34 paramedics
and two EMT- Intermediates
as well as a pool of part-time
paramedics and EMT-I’s. Six
ambulance stations located
throughout the county respond
to over 6,000 emergency calls
a year. All ambulances pro
vide Advanced Life Support
care which may consist of car
diac monitoring/defibrillation,
medication administration,
I.V. therapy, 12 lead EKG
assessment and advanced air
way procedures, if needed.
“Our ambulances now rou
tinely transmit the 12 lead
EKG to the hospital while the
ambulance is enroute,” said
Nichols. “This greatly reduces
the time that it takes to get a
specific type of heart attack
patient into the Cardiac Cath
lab where stents can be placed
and blockages relieved. Often,
because the EKG was trans
mitted, the patient may go
directly into the Cath Lab on
arrival at the hospital. The
capability to transmit the EKG
is the result of our paramedic's
continuous efforts to improve
patient care and outcome for
our community.”
