Local cattleman produces
Hereford Dam of Distinction
THE CROOKED Creek
Polled HFDS of Redstone
Community in South Jackson
County, was recently rec
ognized by the American
Hereford Association
(AHA) for producing one
cow named to the Dams
of Distinction list. CCPH
is owned and operated by
Lonnie L. Williamson.
“These are the most effi
cient cows in the Hereford
breed,” Craig Huffhines,
AHA's executive secretary
said. “They have met the
strictest requirements for
early calving, reproductive
efficiency, calving intervals
of no greater than one year
and weaning weight ratios
in the top end of the breed
er's herd.”
Some 1,941 cows were
named to the prestigious
list for this year. A com
plete listing of the cows
and the 639 breeders who
produced them is available
from the American Hereford
Association or the AHA's
web site at www.hereford.
org. An article review
ing Dams of Distinction is
published in the April 2010
issue of Hereford World
Magazine, the breed’s offi
cial publication.
Jackson EMC grant funds
equipment for children
FRAGILE Kids Foundation
has been awarded a $15,000
grant by the Jackson EMC
Foundation to help provide
equipment for chronically ill
children. Grant funds will
help provide low income
families of medically fragile
children within the counties
Jackson EMC serves with van
electronic wheelchair lifts.
“Our programs enable
these children to confront
the tremendous medical and
social obstacles they face and
reach their maximum reha
bilitation potential.” explains
Fragile Kids executive direc

out one to safely transport
children to therapy, doctor

2005, this “spare change” has
funded 384 grants to orga
nizations and 153 grants to
individuals, putting more
than $4.2 million back into
local communities.

A FIRST...Congratulations to
the ACS girls track team who
won the State Single A cham
pionship held recently at Albany
State College. I believe this was
the first girls track champion
ship won by an Athens area girls
team.
These fine young ladies and
their coaches have worked hard
this spring, and they were quite
thrilled to come out as No. 1 in
the state.
We are thankful for the oppor
tunity to work with parents in
training hundreds of students in
mind, manners, and morals. We
are also thankful that we can
offer many extra-curricular
activities in athletics, music,
speech and art.
