Alleged Census worker damages doors
A MAN claiming to be a U.S. Census
Bureau worker damaged two doors while
knocking for the residents of a house,
according to an incident report filed with
the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
A man living on Golf View Court,
Jefferson, said a man claiming to be
from the Census Bureau came to his
house and started “beating” on the door.
A front door of the residence was
chipped and a back door was dented,
according to an incident report. A dep
uty said it appeared that someone tried
kicking the rear door. There were also
scratch marks on the door, as though
someone was trying to break into the
residence.
A woman inside the house said she
heard the beating on the front and back
doors. She thought the man would break
the glass on the door from beating it.
When she answered the door, the man
never identified himself and starting
demanding her personal information,
the woman said. The man had a Census
sticker on his shirt.
The woman said she didn’t give the
man any personal information, because
she had already submitted her written
Census forms.
The man gave her a piece of paper
with his name and phone number on it,
according to an incident report.
The man then said he’d send a couple
of guys back to the residence in a few
days and he left with his vehicle’s tires
spinning in the driveway. Tire marks
were found on the driveway.
The man and woman at the residence
got the license plate information of the
vehicle.
A deputy provided the residents with
a contact number to the Census Bureau
to file a complaint and to learn if the
man was employed by the agency. Extra
patrol was also provided in the area.
