ZOE RADFORD, a Jefferson
Middle School student, was the
district winner in the “If I Were
Mayor, I Would” essay contest.
Her essay is as follows:
If I were mayor, I would
focus on three areas that could
help the City of Jefferson be
even better than it is today.
The three areas are tourism,
improving the fun of living here
and making the city more eco-
friendly.
One of the first things I would
do to help my city is get more
people to visit. Crawford W.
Long made the City of Jefferson
famous by being the first physi
cian to use ether and anesthesia
in 1842. Why not expand the
museum tour? I suggest that
the Crawford Long Pharmacy
participate in the tour. Maybe
the city could give them money
to renovate and turn the place
back into an 1842 pharmacy.
Then people would tour the
museum, go to the pharmacy to

nesses in Jefferson. This could
all be put on the new tourist
city web site with pictures and
video.
To make it more fun to live in
Jefferson, I would suggest we
build a nature center with lots
will hold a Kids Cheer Camp
on Wednesday, May 26, through
Friday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to
noon at the middle school gym.
The cost is $60 per child or
of trees and plants. It would be
the type of place that anyone
would love to have a picnic.
Maybe UGA could help with
signs that tell what kind of
plants. That way teachers could
have field trips not far from
school and kids would learn
something new.
The last idea I would sug
gest is to help the city be more
eco-friendly. We could build a
recycle center and teach people
how they could help the planet.
And since we already have train
tracks running through town, I
suggest we rebuild a train sta
tion. There could be a special
train that would carry people
anywhere the tracks go, like
Athens or Commerce. It should
not be much money either. This
would stop a whole lot of pol
lution from cars.
So these are my ideas if I
were mayor. Oh, and my mom
says make the post office big
