Students named Governor’s Honors Program finalists

as Governor’s
Honors Program
(GHP) Finalists:

Murray, a junior at Jackson
County Comprehensive
High School, is the son of
Gregory and Iris Murray of
Hoschton.
Chandler, a junior at
East Jackson Comprehensive
High School, is the son of
Russell and Cindi Roberts of
Maysville.
Spinelli, a sopho
more at East Jackson
Comprehensive High School,
is the daughter of John and
Ann Spinelli of Jefferson.
The Governor’s Honors
Program is a six-week sum
mer residential
instructional pro
gram designed to
provide intellec
tually gifted and
artistically tal
ented high school
students challeng
ing and enrich
ing educational
opportunities not
usually avail
able during
the regu
lar school
year. Activities are designed
to provide each participant
with opportunities to acquire
the skills, knowledge and
attitudes to become indepen
dent, life-long learners.
EJMS to honor White, Brown
THE FACULTY and staff of
East Jackson Middle School
will host a retirement recep
tion for David White and
Veronica Brown on Friday,
May 28, from 6-8 p.m., at the
Nicholson Center.
The event will honor their
many years of service to edu
cation. All family, friends and
former students are invited to
attend.
JHS counselors available
during summer for planning
JEFFERSON HIGH
School will have a counsel
or available on Wednesdays
from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
throughout the summer to
meet with parents and stu
dents for any questions or
concerns about schedules
or courses for the 2010-11
school year.

JCCHS student wins congressional art contest
AARON EDWARDS,
a senior at Jackson
County Comprehensive
High School, was named
the winner of the 2010
Congressional Art Contest
by U.S. Rep. Paul Broun,
M.D. (Ga-10).
Edwards is invited to
attend the unveiling of his
white pencil sketch, titled
“Crazy Horse,” at the U.S.
Capitol where his
sketch will be displayed
for one year.
In addition, Edwards
is eligible to receive
the Artistic Honors
Scholarship from
Savannah College of Art
and Design.
Twenty-eight high
school students from
the 10th Congressional
District participated in
this year’s Congressional
Art Competition.
Three judges were pro
vided by the University of
Georgia.

Two Jackson County young authors honored at district level
TANNER HARDEGREE
TWO JACKSON County
School System students
have been named Northeast
Georgia district winners of
the Young Georgia Author
Competition.
Owsley Tanner — an
eighth grade student at West
Jackson Middle School —
and Rachel Hardegree, a
fifth grade student at North
Jackson Elementary School
— were honored.
Tanner wrote the humor
ous piece, “Competition is
Useless,” which explored
the futility of competing
and what it really means
in the bigger scheme of
things.
Hardegree wrote the fic
tion story, “The Big Blue
Dot,” which explored the
problem with being singled
out from her classmates
and feeling odd.
Hardegree’s teacher is
Lori Cato. Tanner’s teacher
is advanced content ELA
teacher Chris Pendley.
TOP POINTS IN LITZ BLITZ
Maysville Elementary fifth grader, Bailey Embrick
was the top points winner in the annual Litz Blitz.
Students are required to read several books and
answer questions about the books in the contest.
Embrick scored 1,975 points.
DRAGON AWARD WINNERS
