Junior Golf
Jackson Co. youths win Atlanta Jr. Golf tourneys
A COUPLE of local golfers got their summers
off to a fast start.
Anthony Whobrey, 12, Jefferson, and
Charlie Jarrett, 11, Jefferson, each won golf
tournaments in their respective age groups on the
Atlanta Junior Golf tour Thursday.
Whobrey earned a five-stroke win in the
18-hole, 12-and-under boys’ division with a
round of 81, while Jarrett finished atop the lea-
derboard in the nine-hole, 12-and-under open
division with a 45.
Another Jefferson golfer, York Delloyd, 14,
took second in the boys’ 13-14-year-old club
division. Delloyd tied for first by firing a four-
over-par 76 but finished second after a scorecard
shootout.
Adi three players are students at Canongate at
Traditions of Braselton.
Another student at Traditions, Chandler
Avery, 14, Dacula, took second in the 18-hole
boys’ 13-and-14 club division with a 92, one
stroke off the lead.
Adi four boys are students of Jeff Kaneko,
head teaching professional at Canongate of
Traditions.
The tournaments were part of the Atlanta
Junior Golf Summer Series at Canongate I Golf
Club in Sharpsburg.
Dizzy Dean continued from IB

gracious enough to provide all
the players in the tournament

evening. Meanwhile, fam
ily, friends and people from

Five Dragons selected for all-region team
Sexton tapped for Ga.
Dugout Club all-star squad
By Ben Munro
FIVE JEFFERSON baseball
players recently received all
region accolades — including
four first-team selections —
while Jamie Sexton will rep
resent the Dragons on an area
all-star team.
The honors came follow
ing the Dragons’ 25-5 season,
which included a region title
and a Sweet 16 appearance in
the Class AA playoffs.
Jake Fields (pitcher, first
base), Kyle Hardy (third base),
Sexton (pitcher) and Andrew
Barteck (designated hitter)
were Region 8-AA first-team
selections, while Lucas Redd
(shortstop) was an honorable
mention pick. Sexton will also
play for the Northeast Georgia
team in the Georgia Dugout
Club Adi-Star games next week.
Jefferson’s four first-team all-
region selections tied it with
North Oconee for the most in
Region 8-AA. The Dragons,

record), went to state Sweet 16

and will have a player representing
the team on the Georgia Dugout
Club’s Northeast Georgia all-star
team.

however, were second to North
Oconee in overall selections.
Many of Jefferson’s all-region
honorees also received awards
from the team.
Fields was named the
Dragons’ MVP; Sexton earned
Pitcher of the Year honors;
Hardy won the Best Defense
award and Redd took the Best
Offense award.
Nahan Carson received the
Coaches Award.
As for next year, the Dragons
are already focused on 2011.
Jefferson will play a summer
league tournament schedule for
the next five weekends, con
cluding July 3.
That slate includes the
July 24-26 Jackson County
Shootout. Jefferson will be one
of the host sites. The Dragons
will also play in two tour
naments in Oconee County,
one in Gwinnett County and
another in Gainesville.
Next season will be a major
transition year for Jefferson,
which loses 11 seniors off this
past year’s region champion
ship team. The Dragons return
just three starters.
That means Jefferson’s up-
and-coming starters will play
some valuable innings this
summer.
“Oh. yeah,” coach Tommy
Knight said. “For some of
them, this is their preseason
because they play a winter
sport.”
At the same time, summer
games are exhibitions and lack
the pressure of regular season
match-ups. That will allow the
Dragons to focus on learning.
“And that’s what we need,”
Knight said. “We just need to
play and figure some things
out.”
Four Panthers named to all-region team
By Ben Munro
AFTER POSTING a win
ning record on the diamond this
past spring (13-12), the Jackson
County Panther baseball team
boasted four selections to the Adl-
Region 8-AAA team.
Senior shortstop Rob
Williams and sophomore pitch
er Austin Robinson both earned
all-region honors, while sopho
more catcher They Sorrells and
sophomore outfielder Quinn
Grogan were honorable selec
tions.
In addition to all-region honors
for these four Panthers, they all
earned team superlatives, too.
Williams led all Panthers with
three awards, winning Offensive
MVP, Scholar Athlete and Team
Captain. Meanwhile. Robinson
was the team’s Cy Young Award
winner, Sorrells won Defensive
MVP honors and Grogan
received the ‘Pawsitive’ Panther
accolade.
Others taking home team
awards were Zack Sticher
(Commitment to Excellence),
Ken Miller (Most Improved),

and Tyler Henderson (Middle

Meanwhile, the Panthers are
already back on the diamond,
propping for 2011. The varsity
squad will play 21 scrimmage
games in June, while the junior
varsity will play 20 games. “This
will be a great opportunity to
go ahead and start seeing what
some of our younger guys can
bring to the table next spring.”
said Tommy Fountain, who
just completed his third year as
the Panthers’ head coach.
Jackson County — which
enjoyed a five-game improve
ment in the win column this
past spring and secured the pro
gram's first wining season in
over a decade — started its
summer exhibition slate this
past weekend, playing in the
Gainesville Memorial Day
Tournament. The teams will
play in the Greater Athens
Classic next weekend.
Included in the summer
slate is the June 24-26 Jackson
County Shootout, in which the
Panthers will host three games
Jackson County returns seven
starters for 2011 and its entire
pitching staff. But not everyone
will be available for the entire
summer season since some
Panthers are splitting time with
summer showcase teams.
“So it will give us an opportu
nity to evaluate other talent and
build some depth,” Fountain
said.
JHS continued from IB
Though it’s an extremely
scaled-down version of the real
thing, teams get 45 reps each
night on both sides of the ball
each Tuesday night, McFerrin
notes.
The passing league schedule
is just part of the defending
Region 8-AA champions’ off
season regimen as they seek to
retain their title.
Jefferson has weight train
ing Mondays and Thursdays
— lifting for about 50 min
utes — and then turns to a
running program and agility
work. In fact, half an hour on
Wednesday nights in July is
devoted solely to agility with a
multi-station set-up.
With Jefferson having just
nine days of spring practice
and missing several players to
other sports, the summer is the
time for players to catch-up
and get re-acclimated to the
system.
“We're doing the very same
things we’ll do in the fall,”
McFerrin said.
Speaking of this fall, the
Dragons will shoot for their
third-consecutive region
title and also try to defend a
20-game regular season win
ning streak.
But realignment made the
region much tougher, McFerrin
said, and the Dragons added
non-region foes like North Hall
to the schedule.
All of this should serve as
motivation for the Dragons in
the dog days of summer.
“They'd better be motivated,”
McFerrin said. “Because the
schedule is much harder and
the region is much harder.”

You know that it takes planning and preparation to sell your
home, and the same applies to making a purchase. But
whether buying or selling, you'll also have to put a lot of
thought into Moving Day. After you've gotten three in-home
estimates from professional moving companies and made your
choice, start packing!
By starting your packing well in advance, you're actually
less likely to pack things you no longer need. Sort those items
separately as you go, and then have a yard sale. Give
everything that's left to a charity, and be sure to get receipts so
you can deduct your donations.
When it comes to packaging materials, you can save both
money and tire environment by using what you've already
got. Instead of bubble wrap or paper, use towels, sheets, and
other soft items to wrap your breakables and save space.
Label each box by number and room, and keep an inventory
of its contents. Save a couple"load last" boxes for easy access
on moving day and your arrival (towels, sheets, toiletries,
medications, etc.)
When you do arrive, try not to be overwhelmed by all the
piles of boxes. It's a lot more fun to unpack and rearrange in
your new home than it is to load everything up. If you're
properly organized, you can quickly get settled. Just work on
one room at a time and be sure to start in the kitchen!
