Police: Suspect tied to $2 million theft ring
A MAN arrested for alleg
edly stealing equipment at
a Hoschton facility is also
involved in a large-scale
theft ring, according to law
enforcement officers.
The Jackson County
Sheriff’s Office has charged
Robert Henry Baker, 45, of
Braselton, with theft by tak
ing.
He is accused of steal
ing a riding lawnmower and
a trailer parked outside at
the Hoschton Wastewater
Treatment Plant in April.
The theft was discovered by
an employee of the Jackson
County Water and Sewerage
Authority — which operates
and maintains Hoschton’s
facility — who said some
one cut a chain securing a
gate at the plant on Nancy
Industrial Blvd. to steal the
items.
The equipment was recent
ly recovered in Gwinnett
County, according to Maj.
David Cochran of the
Jackson County Sheriff’s
Office.
Hoschton got its equip
ment, which had been val
ued at $7,500, back from the
sheriff’s department.
The Gwinnett County
Police Department con
firmed Tuesday that Baker is
tied to a large-scale theft ring
in which two suspects were
arrested in recent weeks.
In those arrests, Gwinnett
police say the suspects and
others sold large quantities
of air conditioning coils
to recycling centers. The
coils and copper appeared
to match theft of commer
cial rooftop air conditioning
units.
From March 1 to April
30, there were 93 reports
of air conditioning thefts in
Gwinnett County with 10 of
those occurring at churches
in the Buford area.
The suspects allegedly
stole large quantities of a
banned refrigerant from the
air conditioning units —
resulting in more than $2
million in damages at the
businesses. One of those
locations included the for
mer Toys-R-Us on Mall of
HENRY BAKER
Georgia Blvd., according to
Gwinnett police.
Baker remains at the
Jackson County Jail and
Gwinnett County police have
requested a “hold” on him
for theft by taking, accord
ing to Cochran.
