BY ALL accounts, Jason
Power’s Jackson County wres
tling team pushed around its
share of foes on the mat this past
season.
When all the points were
talked, the Panthers — who
boasted four area champions,
two state runners-up and a third
place finisher at state — finished
no. 6 in Class AAA at the tradi
tional state meet.
It also fared well in dual
action, finishing as runners-up
in Area 8-AAA and nearly plac
ing at the state duals meet.
“I was pretty pleased,” Powers
said. “We had a really good
graduating class. We graduated
four seniors, and all of them are
pretty tough kids.”
Now, the trick is replacing
what graduated.
That work is ongoing as
Jackson County competed at a
tournament in West Hall Friday,
hosted a takedown tournament
earlier this month and held a
joint practice with Commerce
this past week.
Jackson County is hitting the
weight room and practicing three
times a week as well to prepare
for next year and what will be a
younger Panther lineup.
Panthers
at a glance
•’09-’10 Finish: 6th, Class AAA
•Had four area champions, two
state runners-up and one third-
place finisher
•Lose four seniors off last year’s
team
Jackson County also faces
another change: dropping
down to Class AA this year.
The move means the
Panthers will be assigned
to a region that includes
nearby foes Jefferson, East
Jackson and Banks County.
Jefferson, of course, has won
10 straight traditional state
titles and nine consecutive state
dual crowns.
“It’s not an easy region at
all,” Powers said. “It will be a
competitive one ... We’ve never
been in what you could consider
an easy region.”
So as the Panthers look toward
change in 2010-20011, they’ll
be hard at work over the sum
mer months preparing for it all.
“There are a lot of young
kids coming into the lineup,
a lot of kids who have never
been on varsity before,” Powers
said. “A couple of freshmen are
going to be in the lineup this
year. So definitely, summer is an
extremely important time for us
right now.”

No relaxing for Jefferson
By Ben Munro
THERE’S NO time off for
champions. At least, that’s the
way Jefferson High School wres
tling team looks at it.
With the task of repeating
as state champs growing more
trying every year, the team is
constantly pushing itself in the
summer.
“All good things must come to
an end.” coach Doug Thurmond
said of the streak. “It’s just that
we don’t want them to end any
time soon.”
To that end, the Dragons have
been plenty busy this summer
as they eye an unprecedented
11 th consecutive traditional state
Dragons
at a glance
•’09-’10 finish: 1st, ClasAA
•Had seven individual champions
and one runner-up and claimed
10th straight traditional state title,
won 9th straight state duals title
•Lose five seniors off last year’s
team
wrestling title and a 10 th -
straight duals crown this win
ter.
The team participated in a
tournament at Archer High
School over the weekend and
will head to the Gwinnett
Arena this weekend for the
Militia Duals next weekend.
Jefferson — one of Georgia’s
very best — will face some of
the best teams in the southeast in
the Militia Duals. That includes
squads from Virginia, North
Carolina and South Carolina.
“We’re getting a lot of guys
mat time,” Thurmond said. “So
that’s a good thing for us.”
Then it’s off to the Appalachian
State (Boone. N.C.) in July for
summer camp.
In between the tournaments
and camps, the Dragons continue
their in-squad schedule, which
includes weightlifting Monday
through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 9
a.m. Over 20 wrestlers have been
attending each session.
“It’s fun. We’ve got a bunch
of kids showing up,” Thurmond
said.
Jefferson, which had seven
individual champions and one
runner-up last year, must replace
five starters from the 2009-
2010 lineup as the Dragons
look to keep their string of state
trophies alive.
Thurmond believes the hours
put in now will pay off come
wintertime.
“It’s just the mentality that
we’re never going to slow
down.” Thurmond said. “If
anything, we’re going to keep
the gas pedal kind of pushed
down. You can’t ever relax.”
