69, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010.
A native of Lakeland, Fla.,
she was the daughter of the late
Claude Danish Pope and Bertie
Abigail Dean. She was preceded
in death by her husband of 47
years, William “Billy” Thomas
Allen; stepmother, Carrie Smith;
brothers, Claude “Pete” Pope and
Jack Pope; and a sister, Chris
Lorine Brewer.
Survivors include six children,

in Evergreen Memorial Park

Born in Madison County on
November 24,1930, he was the son
of the late Edgar Carey and Jennie
Beatenbough. Fie was retired from
the Transco Continental Pipeline
and was of the Baptist denomina
tion. Mr. Carey was preceded in
death by his wife, Faye Dora Hill
Carey; a daughter, Dana LeAnne
Carey; brothers, Albert, Chandler
and Alton Carey; and sisters,
Modie Crowe and Cumi Fortson.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, DiAnne Carey, Danielsville;
granddaughters, Bonnie Stith and
Kerry Lynn Stith; and a great
grandchild, Gracie Lynn Dove.

WINDER - Carolyne M. Esco,
79, died Friday, June 11, 2010.
Born in Barrow County, she
was the daughter of the late James
Roy McElhannon and Otis and
Leila Belle Stewart. She was a
homemaker and a former owner
of The Boutique in Winder. She
was a member of the Winder First
Christian Church, where she had
been a Sunday School teacher,
and a member of the Christian
Women’s Fellowship. She was a
lifelong resident of Winder and
was a 1949 graduate of Winder
Barrow FTigh School. Mrs. Esco
was preceded in death by hus
bands, William T. “Bill” Esco Sr.
and her second husband Ralph
T. Lee.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Terry and Tammy
Esco, Auburn; daughters and sons-
in-law, Lynne Esco and Russell
Varnuni, Winder, Donna Esco and
Randy Thompson, Bethlehem;
grandchildren, Michelle Esco

A native of Jackson County, he
had lived in Thomaston for the past
six years. Fie was
of the Korean War
and was a retired
pipefitter for the
Ford Motor Company Plant in
Flapeville. Fie was a member of
Trinity Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife,

ness.
Born in
Flail County,
he was the
son of the
late Jim and Ora Belle Stone
Flooper. He was retired from the
Gainesville Mill and was a mem
ber of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church
in Banks County. Mr. Hooper was
preceded in death by his wife,
Virginia Nell McGee Flooper; and
a sister, Carrie Maldonado.
Fie served with the United
States Army in World War II,
where he served in three Major
Campaigns, including Invasion of
Normandy, Northern France and
Rhineland. He received the World
War II Victory Medal, the Good
Conduct Medal and the European
American Middle Eastern Service
Medal. He was a member of the
Paul E. Bolding Post 7 American
Legion for over 60 years and was
a member of the V.F.W., Sons
of American Revolution, Banks
County Middle River Volunteers
and a life member of the D.A.V.
Gainesville-Hall Chapter.
Survivors include his wife,
Ethelene White Hooper, Lula; son
and daughter-in-law, Ron and Patsy
Hooper, Homer; daughter, Barbara
Ann Hooper, Gainesville; brother,
Herman Hooper, Gainesville; five
stepchildren; grandchildren, Dana
and Greg Abernathy, Cornelia; six
step-grandchildren; and six step-
great-grandchildren.

Medical Center in Gainesville.

Wortie Lee Pressley Evans. Mrs.
Lewallen was preceded in death
by her husband, Verdell Lewallen.

son, Billy Ray (Glenda) Parson,
Commerce; sisters, Shirley
Elrod, Gainesville, Joyce Carter,
Knoxville, Tenn., Carolyn Master

grandchildren.

94, died

June 9, 2010,
at her resi
dence.
Born
in Floyd
County,
she was the
daughter
of the late
Herbert Otto and Willie Clyde
French Landrum. She was a
homemaker and was a talented
seamstress who enjoyed making
“Barbee doll” creations for her
granddaughters. Her love of his
tory and pride in her family name,
Landrum, lead her into the field
of genealogy. Without the assis
tance of a computer, she cataloged
each relative using the Georgia
Archives, and libraries across
northern Georgia. Before her ill
ness she was an active member of
the Columbia Drive Baptist Church
in Decatur. Mrs. Meriwether was
preceded in death by her husband.

Albert Grady (A.G.) Mitchell Jr.,
92, longtime Jefferson business
man and World War II veteran,
died Wednesday, June 9, 2010.
Born in Jackson County, he was
the son of the late Albert “Rip”
and Lillian Venable Mitchell. He
founded and operated Mitchell
Hardware and Building Supply
continuously since 1950.
Mitchell was a United States
Army Veteran of World War II,
serving as a mem
ber of the 1061 s '
Engineer Port
Construction and
Repair Group.
He received the European African
Middle Eastern Service Medal
with one Bronze Star, Asiatic
Pacific Service Medal, World
War II Victory Medal, Philippine
Liberation Ribbon and the Good
Conduct Medal.
He was the oldest charter mem
ber of the American Legion in the
State of Georgia, a lifetime mem
ber of the Jefferson Lion’s Club
and a member of the Bethany
United Methodist Church for 80
years.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in
death by his wife, Lottie Toney
Mitchell; a son, Jerry Mitchell;
daughter-in-law, Judy Marlowe
Mitchell; and sister, Amelia
Lawson.

Ida Mae Smith
Ida Mae (Lewallen) Smith,
90, formerly of Homer and
Commerce, died peacefully in
Hamilton, Mont., Sunday, June
13, 2010.
She will be greatly missed by
all who knew and loved her, loved
ones stated.
Survivors include her son Gail
Patrick Smith and his wife Cathleen
Watson-Smith, Montana; three
granddaughters, Shari Williams,
Florida, Kayla Wilson, Texas, and
Erin Smith, Washington; and five
great-grandchildren.
The body will be cremated and
at a later date brought back to
Commerce.

Douglas Sudderth
HOMER - Douglas Lamar
Sudderth, 51, died Sunday, June
13, 2010, at his residence.
Born in Hall County on
February 14, 1959, he was the son
of Troy and Barbara Buffington
Sudderth of Homer. He was for
merly employed with Magnolia
Window and Door Company
and was a member of the Metro
Baptist Church. Mr. Sudderth
was a loving son, husband, father,
grandfather, and will be greatly
missed by all loved ones stated.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Ricky Lynn Sudderth.
Survivors in addition to his par
ents include his loving wife of 21
years, Diane McCoy Sudderth,
Homer; a son, Brian Lamar
Sudderth, Homer; stepdaughter,
Janice Griffin, Buford; grandson.
Hunter Kade Sudderth, Homer;
and several aunts, uncles, cousins
and friends.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, June 16, from
Whitfield Funeral Home, South
Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev.
Wayne Hicks officiating. Burial
was in the White Hall Baptist
Church Cemetery.

Lisa Woodard
WINDER - Lisa Woodard, 45,
died Sunday, June 6, 2010.
A lifelong Winder resident,
she was the daughter of Helen
Morrow Bell, Bethlehem, and the
late Billie Josh Bell. She was a
1982 graduate of Winder Barrow
High School and graduated from
the University of Georgia in
1987. She was a pharmacist with
Rite Aid and attended Winder
Wesleyan Church. Mrs. Woodard
was preceded in death by a sister,
Helen Joan Bell.
Survivors in addition to her
mother include her husband, Van
Woodard; son. Josh Hammond;
daughters, Jessica Hammond and
Emily Woodard, all of Winder;
brothers, Charles Bell, Winder,
and Julian Bell, Dahlonega; sis
ters, Clara Allen, Bethlehem,
Barbara Goddard, Lilburn, Donna
Standridge, Hull, and Janice
Barckley, Riverside, Calif.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, June 10, from Smith
Memory Chapel, with the Rev.
Greg Moore officiating.
