BY KERRI TESTEMENT
THE LAST vehicles used
by the former Hoschton Police
Department will soon be driv
en by new owners.
On Monday, the city council
approved selling five vehicles
once used by the now-closed
police department to the high
est bidders.
The vehicles netted a total
of $9,320, which will be ear
marked in a designated fund
for someday re-establishing
the police department.
Hoschton had been accept
ing sealed bids of the vehicles
— which included three Ford
Crown Victorias, a Dodge
Ram and a Chevy Astro Van
used for investigations. Those
bids were opened by city offi
cials last week.
The vehicles were sold to
Saw Ent., Inc., Joel Keith, the
City of Comer, Grace Quality
Used Cars and Chicago
Motors, according to city
records. Hoschton received
six to 11 bids for each of the
vehicles.
The city also sold a 1999
Ford F-150 pickup truck
that been used by the city’s
public works department for
$2,770. The money will be
placed in the city’s general
fund account.
Michael Mauldin was
awarded the bid on the vehi
cle, which received 11 bids.
Last month, the council
donated a 2004 Chevy Tahoe
that had been used by the city’s
former police chief to the West
Jackson Fire Department. The
Tahoe had been purchased, in
part, with $10,000 raised dur
ing an auction to benefit the
former police department.
The city council also sold
two, unused 2009 Dodge
Chargers in March to the
City of Monroe, which paid
$18,089 for each vehicle. The
Chargers had been purchased
in fall 2009 for the police
department.
The money for those vehicles
was placed in the city’s water
and sewer reserve account
since they had been purchased
with funds Hoschton received
in a legal settlement with its
former engineer over faulty
design of the wastewater treat
ment facility.
Hoschton closed its police
department in January as part
of a budget-slashing move
to keep the city financially
afloat.
