Math, science teachers participate in program
AT HUBER ENGINEERED WOODS
Math and science teachers for the Jackson County School System recently par
ticipated in a week-long institute that included a trip to Huber Engineered Woods,
Commerce.

ers recently participated in
a Math Science Partnership
Grant summer institute.
Teachers attended the
week-long institute, which
allowed them to experience
real-world applications of
the subjects that they teach.
Teachers learned about
inquiry and problem solv
ing, cutting-edge scientific
research and data analysis.
The group visited
Huber Engineered Woods,
Commerce, and Mayfield
Dairy, Braselton.
Teachers were able to gain
practical examples of sci
ence, technology, engineer
ing, and mathematics appli
cations for enriched instruc
tion and teaching practices
based on evidence-based
experiences.
In addition to the visits,
local businesses and govern
ment agencies in a panel
discussion held on the first
day of the institute elaborat
ed on the math and science
applications in their field of
work.
Panel participants included
Shade Storey of Northeast
Georgia Bank; Joe Dorough
and Keith Johnson, both
from Jackson EMC; and
Grant Harvey of Plum Creek
Timber.
The Math Science
Partnership Grant is a
year-long partnership with
Jackson County Schools and
the University of Georgia.
UGA faculty members
working on the project
include Dr. Tim Foutz and
Dr. Sid Thompson from the
department of biological and
agricultural engineering, and
Dr. Roger Hill and Dr. Anna
Conner from the college of
education.
Kathy Miller, director of
curriculum and accountabili
ty, and Deborah Riddleberger,
professional learning coor
dinator, both at Jackson
County Schools coordinated
the institute with the UGA
partners.

UPCOMING FRESHMAN
cadets of Jefferson High School
attended a Summer Training
Camp, known as Camp
Dragon, at Jefferson High
School, June 7-11. Thirteen
basic cadets successfully com
pleted the Summer Training
Camp held at Jefferson High
School for AFJROTC.
Melissa Allen, Tyler
Armstrong, Ashley David,
Austin Denton, Scott Engesser,
Victoria Engesser, Michelle
Hickman, Levi Kent, Moria
Patterson, Talon Smedley,
Suzane Sowards, Dominick
Stanziale, and Matthew Weaver
completed Camp Dragon.
The camp functions
as an introduction to
AFJROTC, focusing on
Cadet Responsibilities, Drill
and Ceremony, Physical
Fitness, and preparation for
future Leadership Camps.
Additionally, these cadets
received their first promotion,
Cadet Airman, for completion
of this camp.
All the basic cadets were
awarded the Summer
Leadership Camp Ribbon.
Cadets Melissa Allen, Ashley
David, Austin Denton, Scott
Engesser, Suzane Sowards,
and Matthew Weaver were
awarded the Outstanding
Flight Ribbon. Cadets
Matthew Weaver and Suzane
Sowards were awarded the
Physical Fitness Ribbon, and
Cadet Dominick Stanziale was
awarded the Drill Competition
Ribbon.
This group of cadets’ team
work, team spirit, and cama
raderie stood out, and they are
setting the stage for another
great year for AFJROTC at
JHS.

Lawrenceville.
From leadership and man
agement to bilingual inter
preter training, the Center
for Continuing Education

either looking to enhance
their work skills or start a

are also available.

agement; conference and
meeting management; glob
al TESOL; grant writing;
healthcare; human resource

leadership and coaching

Open house, registration
planned at middle school
JEFFERSON MIDDLE
School will be holding open
house/registration on Friday,
July 30, from 2 to 5 p.m.
During registration, parents
and students will complete the
necessary documentation for
the 2010-2011 school year,
receive their schedule, meet
their teachers, and obtain
other important informa
tion about Jefferson Middle
School. All registration mate
rials can be accessed on the
Jefferson Middle School
website at jeffcityschools.
org. Parents may complete
all documents prior to open
house to help expedite the
registration process.
All students returning to
Jefferson City Schools will
report to their grade level
halls upon arrival. New stu
dents to the Jefferson City
School System should report
to the front office.
An opportunity will be pro
vided for parents to purchase
additional items for their
student, such as lockers and
physical education uniforms.
School supplies and Booster
Club memberships will also
be available for purchase.

JHS registration dates set
REGISTRATION will be
held at Jefferson High School
on the following dates:
•Thursday, July 29, 12th
graders, noon to 1:30 p.m.,
cafeteria.
•Thursday, July 29, 11th
graders, 2 to 3:30 p.m., caf
eteria.
•Friday, July 30, 10th
graders, 10:30 a.m. to noon,
cafeteria.
•Friday, July 30, ninth
graders, 1 to 3 p.m., caf
eteria.
Students will complete
the following activities at
registration: Pick up class
schedule, be photographed
for student ID card and
yearbook, get locker rental
for $10, purchase parking
permits for $25, pick up
school information concern
ing policies, procedures and
programs, purchase school
supplies from school store,
meet teachers and staff and
ask questions.
Classes begin Monday,
Aug. 2. There will be dif
ferent times for the school
day this year. The school
day will start at 7:50 a.m.
and end at 2:55 p.m.
A school counselor is
available every Wednesday
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. dur
ing the summer months to
assist students and parents
with course schedules and
transcripts.

Open enrollment ongoing
for county Head Start center
OPEN ENROLLMENT
at the Jackson County Head
Start center for Early Head
Start, Head Start and Pre-K
is ongoing.
Head Start serves all
children ages 12 months to
five years. A child must be
at least 12 months on or by
Sept. 1, 2010, in order to be
eligible.
For enrollment, parents
are asked to bring the fol
lowing documentation:
•proof of income (W-2,
1040, check stubs, TANF,
SSI/Social Security, letter
from employer, child sup
port, etc.)
•proof of residence (cur
rent lease, utility bills,
etc.)
•child’s birth certificate,
•current immunization
form (3231 form).
•child and parent’s Social
Security cards.
•child’s insurance card
(Medicaid, Peachcare, pri
vate, etc.).
•picture identification,
•proof of child’s current
well baby check-ups.
The Head Start center

Holloway named to dean’s list

Holloway, Jefferson, has
been named to the dean’s list
for spring semester at Young
Harris College.
Students who achieve a 3.5
grade point average or better
