Arnold Sr.

Arnold. He
was the for
mer owner of
Athens Bible Book Store for 35
years and was a member of the
Redstone Methodist Church. Mr.
Arnold was a veteran of the United
States Army/Air Force serving
during World War II.
Survivors include his wife,
Charlotte Hale Arnold; daughter
and son-in-law, DeMaris and David
Hooper, Nicholson; and grandson,
Micah Hooper, Nicholson.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, July 20, from the cha
pel of Evans Funeral Home with
Mr. David Hooper officiating. The
entombment was in the Evergreen
Memorial Park in Athens. Honored
as pallbearers were Kenneth
Whelchel, Jeff Whelchel, Hopper
Alexander, Homer Sims, Henry
Asbury and Brian Duke.

Davis, 72, died Thursday, July

Born on August 9, 1937, in
Jefferson, he was the son of the
late Malvin Henry and DeMaris
Thurmond Davis. He owned and
operated L.H. Davis and Son
Logging for over 40 years. He was
a member of the Lebanon United
Methodist Church and served in
the United States
Army. Mr. Davis
was preceded in
death by a son,
Derek Rueben
Davis; brother, Norris Davis; and
sister, Marian Davis Porter.
Survivors include his wife,
Muarl Davis, Jefferson; son and
daughter-in-law, Henry and Lori
Davis, Jefferson; sisters, Faye
Davis and Marsha Davis, both
of Athens, and Molly Brannon,
Oakwood; brothers, Joel Davis
and Phil Davis, both of Jefferson,

“Dover” Dover, Jr., 65, died Friday,
July 9, 2010.
A native of Oglethorpe
County, he was the son of the
late Walter Guy Dover Sr. and
Marjorie Josephine Johnson Dover
McCarty. He was the owner of
Dover’s Garage. Mr. Dover was
preceded in death by a grand
daughter, Chelsea Richardson and
two sisters, Marjorie Drinkard and
Rachael D. Inglett.
Survivors include his wife of 45
years, Mary Dover; children, Eddie
Dover (Roxanne Richardson-
Dover) and Wanda Tittle (Mike);

David Embry, 67, died Tuesday,
July 20, 2010, at Athens Regional
Medical Center in Athens.
Born in Royston, he was the son
of the late Olis
David and Reatha
Brooks Embry.
He retired from
Harris Trucking
after 10 years
and was a member of Friendship
Baptist Church. He was a vet
eran having served in the United
States Army during the Vietnam
War and received the Purple Heart
and Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife,
Ann Embry; son and daughter-in-
law, Michael and Angie Embry,
Colbert; grandchildren, Kendra
and Karissa Embry; special nieces
and nephews, Michelle Thomas,
Cathy Elrod, Bruce and David
Moon; as well as a number of
other relatives.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday, July 22, at 11:30 a.m.,
at Friendship Baptist Church with
the Revs. Mark Palmer and Larry
Elliott officiating. Burial will be
in the church cemetery. The fam

to 8 p.m. at the funeral home
Wednesday evening.

Henry Evans
WINDER - Rev. Henry Newton
Evans, 84, died Thursday, July 15,
2010.
A native of Rome, he was the son
of the late Pete and Ella McGuire
Evans. He was preceded in death
by a brother, James M. Evans. A
resident of Barrow County since
1976, Rev. Evans was ordained
as a Baptist Minister in 1957.
He served as pastor of Carl First
Baptist Church for 13 years and
Garden Heights Baptist Church for
five years.
Rev. Evans was a veteran of
the United States
Navy and served
during World War
II and the Korean
Conflict. He was
a member of Shannon Lodge #100,
F. & A. M. and was a member of
Scottish Rite in Atlanta and was
a 33rd Mason. Rev. Evans was
employed at Ingles Grocery Store
since 1989.
Survivors include his wife,
June Putnam Evans, Winder; son
and daughter-in-law, James E. and
Patricia Evans, Voluntown, Conn.;
daughter, Shelia Smith, Winder;
four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, July 17, from the cha
pel of Carter Funeral Home with
the Rev. Doyle Sims and Mr. Bill
Banks officiating. Burial was
in East View Cemetery, Rome,

HOMER - Fred Gibson, 83,
died Thursday, July 15, 2010, at
Habersham County Medical Center
following a period of declining
health.
Born in Banks County on
October 14, 1926, he was the son
of the late Owen and Dicey Jane
Lawrence Gibson. He was retired
as group leader with Lumite
Corporation with 36-1/2 years of
dedicated service. He was a mem
ber of Damascus Baptist Church
and attended Mt. View Baptist
Church. He enjoyed gardening
and farming. Mr. Gibson was pre
ceded in death by a daughter, Patsy
Jean Gibson; and sisters, Edith
Churchwell Watkins and Florene
Fulghum.
Survivors include his loving
wife of 61 years, Lucille Jackson
Gibson, Homer; sons, Eddie
Randall Gibson and Roger Carroll
Gibson, both of Homer; a broth

Virgil Gordon
WINDER - Virgil L. Gordon,
91, died Friday, July 16, 2010.
A Barrow County native, he
was the son of the late Judson and
Geroline Griffeth Gordon. He
was a retired Air Force Sergeant
Major and also a P.O.W. of World
War II. He was in the 800 Mile
March when he was liberated. Mr.
Gordon was awarded every Medal
the Air Force gave at the time
of his retirement including the
Purple Heart, The Bronze Star,
Silver Star. He
was a member of
the Winder Moose
Lodge, The Winder American
Legion, a Life Member of the V.F.
W. of Winder and a member of
AMVETS, which was named in
his and his brother’s honor. Mr.
Gordon was of the Baptist denom
ination. He was preceded in death
by his first wife, Betty G. Gordon;
a son, Clark E. Gordon; daugh
ter, Jeroline Gordon; and stepson,
John Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah
Gordon, Winder; children, Barbara

Sr., 91, passed away peacefully

Hospice
House.
Born in
Oconee
County in
1919. he was
the son of the
late Henry
Comer and
S a f r o n i a
Elizabeth
Malcom Parrish. He was pre
deceased by his first wife and
mother of his children, Inzanell
Sims Parrish; his second wife,
Hilda Taylor; nine siblings, Jessie
Lou, Clay, Robert Lee, Claude,
Alvin, Agnes P. Harrison, Gerard,
Elizabeth P. Maxey, and an
unnamed infant sister.
Joe's mother died when he
was four years old. His sister
Agnes raised him and their sister
Elizabeth along with Agnes’ chil
dren, Dot H. Hawk, Joe Loy and
the late Talmadge Harrison.
Joe, a Navy Veteran, was a
cotton farmer and a carpenter in
his early years. He also worked
for several textile companies in
Barrow, Walton, Rockdale and
Clarke counties until the late 60s.
He and his second wife went into
the chicken business on the farm
where he was born and raised.
They were the Outstanding Egg
Producers for the state of Georgia
in 1980 and the Oconee County
Farm Bureau Outstanding Family
for 1982. He was a member of
Hebron Christian Church.
His jovial nature and good sense
of humor made him a host of
friends. He was a hard worker all
of his life. He was multi-talented
and smart during his lifetime, and
he was able to repair almost any
thing. He was an outdoors man
who loved to hunt rabbits and
dove. He loved baseball and he
loved Dot’s pickles and chocolate
pie. He was helpful and gener
ous to anyone in need. He was
thankful for the help and love
he received, especially during his
declining years, and he abundantly
expressed his thankfulness. He
was a compassionate man who
had a positive outlook on life, and
he will be greatly missed by those
who knew and loved him.

be at Hebron Christian Church

Grandsons and Dan Dawson.

John Perpall
MONROE - Dr. John J. Perpall,
Jr., 92, a devoted husband, father,
grandfather and faithful friend,
passed away peacefully at home
with his family on July 15, 2010.
He was born in Miami, Fla. on
October 20, 1917, to the late Mr.
and Mrs. John J. Perpall, Sr. He
was preceded in death by Barbara
T. Perpall, his devoted wife of 59
years.
Survivors include his chil
dren, Dr. Michael E. and Beth
Perpall, Norcross, Richard W.
and Carol Perpall, Danielsville,
John J. Ill and Belinda Perpall,
Monroe; grandchildren David
and Mary Beth Perpall, Mark and
Lisa Perpall, Lauren and Mike
Riepenhoff, Suzanne and Phillip
Griffeth, Ryan and Sara Perpall,
Leona and Isaac Webster, John J.
IV and Jacquie Perpall; six great
grandchildren; and several nieces

Dr. Perpall was educated at the
University of Florida and Atlanta
Southern Dental College. Upon
graduation in 1942, he served in
World War II as a dentist in the
United States Army Air Corp at
several bases in the states and
in the Philippines. After the war,
he returned to Atlanta and prac
ticed dentistry for almost 40 years.
After retiring from private prac
tice, Dr. Perpall was employed at
DeKalb College, where he served
as the Supervising Dentist for the
School of Dental uuijjlij —

10 years. He was
lifetime member
of the American
Dental Association, active in the
Georgia Dental Association and
the Fifth District Dental Society,
and was a past Grand Master of
the Theta Theta Chapter of Delta
Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. Dr.
Perpall was always interested in
helping others and did so by serv
ing in various organizations such as
the Boy Scouts of America where
he was awarded the Silver Beaver,
the Annawakee Foundation where
he donated his time as a dentist
for the boys and also served on
the Board of Directors. He was a
deacon, an elder, and held other
leadership positions in his church
for many years.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, July 17, at Wages
Snellville Chapel with the Rev.
Russell Davis officiating. The
grandsons and nephews served
as pallbearers. Burial with mili
tary honors was held at Gwinnett
Memorial Park in Lawrenceville.

member of Faith Baptist Church
in Jefferson.
Survivors include sons and
daughters-in-law, Thomas H. and
Bonnie Poole, Whitleyville, Tenn.,
Frank D. and Robin Poole, Auburn,
Robert K. Poole, Pendergrass,
and Roy W. and Debbie Poole,
Virginia; sisters, Betty J. Jackson,
Pendergrass, Margaret Jackson,
Jefferson; granddaughters, Katie
Poole, Guila Poole, Nicole and
David Poole, Kimberly and James
Harper; grandsons, Thomas Poole
Jr., Roy Poole Jr., Kenneth Pool,
William Poole, Joshua Poole; and
two great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Ann “Shad” Zimmer, 59,
died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at her
residence following an extended
illness.
Born in Indianapolis, Ind., she
was the daughter of the late Ralph
E. and Laura Apple Pacey. She was
of the Methodist denomination and
was a member of Phi Theta Kappa
and Past Grand Adah, Grand
Chapter in Florida OES. Mrs.
Zimmer was preceded in death by
a son, James Lucas Zimmer; and
sister, Nancy P. Osteen.
Survivors include F. Robert
"Bob” Zimmer, Flowery Branch;
sons and daughters-in-law,
Christian and Heather Zimmer,
Flowery Branch, and Allen and
Crystal Zimmer, Duluth; daughter-
in-law, Danyell Zimmer Blalock,
Flowery Branch; and a sister,
Barbara P. Yamka, Daytona Beach,
