JHS AFJROTC cadets complete drill camp
Tinnell earns master’s degree
SEVEN JEFFERSON
High AFJROTC Cadets
attended and completed the
inaugural Drill Leadership
School (DLS) held at Mercer
University in Macon the
week of July 11-16. There
were 101 cadets from 16
schools in attendance. The
cadets received training from
Military Training Instructors
from the Air Force Basic
Training program at Lackland
Air Force Base, Texas.
Christian Edens, Carlos
Marte, Juliann Watson.
Maribel Rodriguez. Shane
Arbanas. Mark Weaver and
Savannah Sloan attended and
completed the DLS from the
Dragon Group.
The DLS was set-up to
have cadets Learn, Apply,
and Excel at drill with a drill
meet closing out the camp on
Friday. During the drill meet
on the last day of camp, the
Dragon Group brought home
several awards. The teams
were a mixture of cadets
from different schools, which
tested cadets" ability to work
with individuals from other
schools.
Savannah Sloan’s team won
the Unarmed Drill Exhibition
competition; Christian Eden’s
team won the Unarmed
Regulation Drill competition;
and Carlos Marte’s team won
the Armed Exhibition com
petition.
In individual competition.
Mark Weaver was award
ed the Outstanding Drill
Leader award in the Master’s
Category.
The 101 cadets in atten
dance at DLS competed for
the Individual Drill Routine
Awards with Edens finishing
third and Juliann Watson fin
ishing fifth.
The final awards given
were for the Best Room
Inspection, which was given
to the top of the 101 cadets
that earned the highest overall
room inspection average dur
ing the week. The competi
tion was tough with Juliann
Watson and Mark Weaver of
Jefferson tying with Brendon
Williams of Southside High

three cadets had a perfect
average score of “100” for the
five days of DLS. Williams
edged Watson, second place,
and Weaver, third place for
the top award.
“To finish with a perfect
score took constant attention
to detail.” said chief master
sergeant Budell Willis. “We
are very proud of Juliann and
Mark for performing excep
tionally during the week. All
the cadets are to be applauded
for representing JHS in an
exceptional manner.”
The DLS was set-up to fine
tune practical drill applica
tion skills and knowledge of
Air Force drill. The cadets
worked on their drill, color
guard and leadership skills at
the camp. Additionally, they
developed drill team and color
guard recruiting and retention
skills, team scheduling, prop
er wear of the uniform at drill
meets, and how to interpret
and execute drill meet operat
ing instructions or standard
operating procedures.
“We are looking forward to
these seven cadets taking on
key leadership roles on our
drill teams this coming school
year,” stated Major Bryan
Watson. “We see the lessons
taught at this camp helping
our drill teams succeed this
coming school year.”
Raymond J. Ahern Jr, son of
Angela J. Poe of Jefferson,
and Raymond J. Ahern Sr..
Red Lion, Pa., recently
completed U.S. Navy basic
training at Recruit Training
Command, Great Lakes. Ill.
During the eight-week
program, Ahern completed
a variety of training which
included classroom study
and practical instruction on
naval customs, first aid, fire
fighting, water safety and
survival, and shipboard and
aircraft safety. An emphasis
was also placed on physical
The capstone event of boot
camp is “Battle Stations”.
This exercise gives recruits
the skills and confidence
they need to succeed in the
fleet. “Battle Stations” is
designed to galvanize the
basic warrior attributes of
sacrifice, dedication, team
work and endurance in each
recruit through the practical
application of basic Navy
skills and the core values
of Honor. Courage and
Commitment.
Ahern is a 2009 graduate
of Jefferson High School.

Jefferson, was awarded a
degree at Lesley University
in Cambridge, Mass., in
May.
She earned a master of
education degree in cre
ative arts in learning from
the school of education at
Lesley University.

men, is one of the nation’s
largest providers of gradu
ate professional education
opportunities to K-12 edu
cators.

Johnson recognized for
SIFE accomplishments
JERRY W.
Johnson II
is a member
of the SIFE
team of stu
dents in free
enterprise at
Gainesville
College,
which
won many
achieve
ments,
including
being top
five in America in the capi
tal markets competition.
Johnson was one of two
students in the group select
ed to attend the SIFE World
Cup in Berlin, Germany,
founded by the Goldman
Sachs Foundation.
Johnson also served as
president of SIFE and led
the group to regionals and
on to the national com
petition in
Minneapolis.
The SIFE
team was one
of the only
two-year col
lege SIFE
teams to
make it into
the national
competi
tion 15 years
straight.
During
his time
at Gainesville College,
Johnson also was on the
merit list, dean’s list and
president’s list two semes
ters in a row. He transferred
to the University of Georgia
with a 3.9 grade point aver
age to pursue a degree in
accounting.
Johnson is the son of Jerry
Johnson, Hoschton, and
Kathy Walker. Franklin.

Stevens receives scholarship
JESSICA STEVENS,
who graduated from Jackson
County Comprehensive High
School in May, received
a $6,000 “Appalachian
At-Promise Scholarship”
from the Georgia Appalachian
Center for Higher Education.
The Georgia Appalachian
Center for Higher Education
sponsors this scholarship to
assist students in attending a
GACHE partner post-second-
ary institution.
