GETTING IT DONE IN THE SUMMER
Brittney Crews (right) has been practicing this sum
mer with current Georgia Southern guard and former
Jefferson player Mimi DuBose (left).
Crews continued from IB
a full basketball scholarship to
Brenau where she played for
the last two years. She averaged
2.4 points a game during that
span but shot 52 percent from
beyond the arc this past year.
Her dream of playing for
UGA never went away, though.
That drive was reinforced after
crossing paths with Landers in
the summer of 2009 and then
in December 2009 when Crews
broke her finger in the middle of
her sophomore season at Brenau.
After some soul-searching,
she decided to move on.
With the help of her old
JHS coach Jason Gibson —
who knows some of the Lady
Bulldog coaches — she was
able to get connected with
UGA. Crews sent a DVD
of her Brenau highlights to
the Lady Bulldog coaches,
who liked what they saw.
Crews, who has at least
two years of collegiate eli
gibility remaining, said the
chance to tryout is God-sent.
“He’s the one who’s opened
up all these doors and stuff for
me, and honestly, two years
ago I would have never thought
I would have been able to
play at UGA,” Crews said.
At 5’9,” Crews played forward
in high school but is a natural
shooting guard. In fact, Gibson
called Crews one of the best out
side shooters he’s ever coached.
“She’s deadly out
there,” he said.
Crews’ summer regimen
includes at least 500 shots a
day, half of which are those
three-pointers she loves to
shoot. Crews — who prac
tices daily with former Lady
Dragon and current Georgia
Southern guard Mimi DuBose
— also works extensively on
ball handling skills and con
ditioning as she gets ready for
her big August tryout day.
She has never been one
to shy away from hard
work, Gibson said.
“I’ve always known Brittney
as a dedicated kid,” said the
coach, who praised Crews as
a great team leader on and off
the court. “Back even when
she played for us, she always
wanted to be in the gym.”
While this long-range
shooter hopes to be in a Lady
Bulldog uniform when next
season starts. Crews is pre
pared for life with or without
a basketball in her hands.
She is a biology major
and is excited about
being a UGA student.
“I’ve always wanted to
go to UGA in general,”
Crews said. “A lot of my
family has graduated from
there ... If it doesn’t work
out, I’ll stay there and keep
studying biology and go
down that road, but hope
fully, it will work out.”
For now, Crews is just
excited that’s she’s just
being given a chance. Many
people have dreams. She’s
getting to tryout for hers.
“Ever since I was little,
I was going to be a Lady
Bulldog in my mind,” Crews
said. “It’s unreal how the
Lord has opened up opportu
nities for me to get to do my
dream. So I’m really excited.”

NORTH GEORGIA SWIM LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Sea Dragons take
second in league
championship
THE JEFFERSON Sea Dragons swam
their way to runners-up honors over the
weekend at the North Georgia League cham
pionships.
That’s up one spot from last year’s third-
place finish and three
places over a fifth-
place finish in 2008.
The event was
split between the
Habersham County
and Gainesville.
The first session
was held Friday at the
Habersham County
pool, while the second
and third session took
place at the Francis
Meadows Aquatic
Center in Gainesville Saturday. Four Sea
Dragons earned high-point trophies at the
event, led by C.J. Guzman, who earned
the first-place high-point trophy in the
10-and-under boys’ division. Meanwhile,
Alyssa Bartloetta (6-and-under girls), Haley
Bartoletta (10-and-under girls) and Bree
Hanson (12-and-under girls) earned third-
place trophies.
The Sea Dragons also swam Monday at
Bishop Park in their last dual meet.
Next up is state, and Jefferson is taking a
crowd.
Forty-four Sea Dragons will go to Tifton
Friday to compete in the State Tournament,
with all 10-and-under swimmers competing
Friday and the older swimmers on Saturday.

Gresham continued from IB
The event was fast and furious, being
slowed twice by red flags. The first flew on
lap 74 when the cars of Donnie Wilson and
Ben Kennedy tangled on the backstretch
Kennedy’s car was pushed up the wall,
and rode into turn three on the driver’s side
before coining down on all four tires in
the third turn. Both drivers walked away
uninjured.
The second red flag flew in the closing
laps. While racing for a top five position,
Jason Hogan spun after contact with another
car in the third turn with three laps remain
ing. Hogan’s car made hard contact with the
outside wall, lifting off the ground. It landed
on all fours, and came to rest between turns
three and four. The crash ended Hogan’s
night, but he walked away uninjured.
Jimmy Weller, Greg Simpson, Jody
Lavender, Daniel Johnson and Randy
Gentry rounded out the top 10.
After being flagged for second, how
ever, T.J. Reaid did not pass post-race
tech, and was relegated to 20th place.
Results are unofficial until certified by CRA
officials.
Grill’s win in March at GMP qualified
him for a guaranteed starting spot in the 27th
annual World Crown 300 on November 14,
so the starting spot for this event’s winner
went unclaimed.
There was also lots of action in the local
divisions.
Curt Britt charged to the lead from the
drop of the green flag in the Truck division
race, and was never seriously challenged
again. Brian Huff took second, while Cohen
Motes made a late charge to finish third,
and Brittney Finley took fourth and Chris
Wagner finished fifth.
Spanky Hicks became a four-time win
ner at GMP with a wire-to-wire run for the
win in the Mini-Stock division. He beat
out Avery Burgess for the win while Steve
Hill took third, Scott Beck fourth and Troy
French fifth.
Jason Bates, and his dog Roscoe, made
their fourth trip to GMP’s victory lane in
the Outlaw Late Model division, as they
held off hard charges from Mike Davidson,
Tina Stephens and David Murphy in a tight
four car battle for the win. Brian Hardman
rounded out the top five.
Greg Jarrett held off a hard charging Mike
Childers to take the victory in the Renegade
feature. Jody Trivette, Brian Beckner and
Nathaniel Carlisle rounded out the top five.
Will Fagen outdistanced the field to win
the first Mini-Cup feature of the night on
the GMP quarter-mile. Emilee Riley took
second with Brody Bullard third. Mason
Elzey fourth and Austin Raines fifth.
Casey Willingham made an early charge
to the lead in the second Mini-Cup event
and never looked back, taking the win over
Will Fagen and Emilee Riley.
Next up at Gresham Motorsports Park
will be a 100-lap Pro Late Model event on
Saturday, August 14.
