All-Stars
Jefferson all-stars complete historic run
THE JEFFERSON 14-year-
old all-stars won their second
consecutive Dizzy Dean state
baseball championship in an
8-3 extra-inning thriller over
Rome last Tuesday.
The Dragons joined a rare
club of repeat state champi
ons, much to the delight of a
packed house at the Jefferson
Recreation Complex, which
hosted the five-day tournament
that featured 14 teams from all
six Dizzy Dean districts.
Coach Keith Lord's team
opened the tournament with a
12-0 thrashing of Shaw Park.
Keenan Lord picked up the win
while Colby Woodall and Jace
McColskey pitched scoreless
relief. Chandler Thompson
went 4-for-4 at the plate while
Lord went 3-for-4.
Round two saw Jefferson
trounce Powder Springs 12-2.
Lord, Thompson, Woodall and
Satchel Turpin all had at least
two hits apiece in the offensive
onslaught. Thompson picked
up the win for the victors,
while McColskey and Turpin
pitched relief.
Round three was a preview
of the championship game as
the Dragons defeated Rome
8-7 in extra innings. Austin
Mixon scored in the top of the
eighth inning on a throwing
error by Rome to score the
winning run. McColskey was
the star of the game on the
mound, as he picked up the win
by shutting down Rome in the
last two innings. Keenan Lord
also pitched four solid innings
for Jefferson. Thompson, Lord
and Turpin all had two hits
apiece in the thriller.
Repeat champs
•The Jefferson 14-year-old base
ball all-stars won their second
consecutive state title, going
unbeaten in district and state
play. This same group won the
13-year-old state title last year.
Jefferson thrashed
Chickamauga 16-0 in the next
round. Satchel Turpin picked
up the win for the Dragons,
while Colby Woodall provid
ed one inning of relief. Lord,
Turpin, Thompson, Kody
McDonald and Andy Nicolaus
all had three hits apiece in the
win.
In the championship, Lord
and Thompson held Rome at
bay for most of the night, with
the game becoming a battle
of which team would make
the first mistake. Tradd Porter
came up in the 10th inning
with the bases loaded and hit
a shot to third base which was
caught, but an errant throw
home scored Andy Nicolaus
and the Dragons never looked
back. Jefferson scored four
more runs that inning and
McColskey sealed the win by
mowing down Rome in the
bottom half of the 10th in
relief. McColskey held Rome
scoreless over the last four
innings and struck out eight.
Nicolaus also had three hits
on the night while throwing
out three runners from his
catching position.
The win concluded the
greatest run by a Jefferson
youth baseball team ever. The
Dragons won two straight
state championships, four
straight district titles and
finished third in last year's
World Series in New Orleans
and Pensacola.
After the game, Coach
Keith Lord said “All good
things must end but I couldn’t
pick a better way to end it.
My assistants Paul Etchison,
Steve McColskey and Eric
Nicolaus have gone an entire
season without a single com
plaint from a kid or parent. All
12 kids contributed in some
way and we seemed to have
a different hero every night.
Our success goes beyond the
box scores to the little things
like Eli Griffin’s lock down
defense at first, the smooth
fielding of Josh Santos at
second and the clutch hitting
of Chris Woodall. This team
is truly special and they have
been a joy to coach."
