I HEARD a
great song over
the weekend
called “The House
that Built Me” by
Miranda Lambert.
It talked of walking
back into our child
hood homes and
taking back some
memories.
I’m sure there are
many of us today who would
like to take a step back in time,
and relive some of those mem
ories that seem like a lifetime
ago. So, in my mind and in my
heart. I’ve taken a step back to
a time where things were easy
and times were good.
If I could walk in the bath
room, I’d stop at the shiny
black and silver scale. I remem
ber the first time I climbed up
on it and waited for the dial to
stop. I weighed a whopping 40
pounds.
I remember the smell of
fried chicken wafting through
the house as Mom prepared
supper in anticipation of Dad
coming in the door. Then, my
parents, along with my brother,
would sit down together every
evening, talk about our day,
and just spend time together.
And how could I forget our
Friday night tradition of sitting
together on the couch, eating a
bowl of popcorn and watching
our favorite television shows.
Then, I would walk out
those doors and began to envi
sion the church that built me.
Gosh, I have some wonder
ful memories of Sugar Hill
Baptist Church. As my mind
Tickets are $15 per person and

the worship service, stop for
lunch and then go to the play.
Tickets are $15. A limited
number of tickets are avail
able. “You do not have to be
goes back in time,
there I am sitting in
the church pew when
my feet barely hung
over the bench.
My mind flashes
back to Sunday
School where my
teachers encouraged
me to write God’s
word on the tablet
of my heart. I was
probably 8-years-old when I
learned Psalm 56:3. “What
time I am afraid I will trust in
Thee,” rolled through my mind
when I think back to myself as
a child, scared to death in the
dark. My mind goes to a time
when I was standing in a dark
and musty basement waiting
on an impending tornado, still
that scripture racing through
my mind.
Little did I know, as my
teachers flipped through the
pages of their Sunday school
books, they were building
character in my life. I didn’t
know that going to youth choir
practice, Acteens, Training
Union, Sunday School, and
worship services were making
me into the woman that I’ve
come to be. Today, I thank
God for the house that built
me. Today, I thank God for
the church that built me. Take
a minute, a step back in time,
and grab hold of the memories
of the house and the church
that built you.
