Adult education honors day held at Hurricane Shoals Park on July 10
THE SECOND annu
al Jackson County Adult
Education Honors Day event
was held Saturday, July 10, at
Hurricane Shoals Park. The
Jackson County Certified
Literate Community Program
honored the 2009-2010 com
pleters and the GED gradu
ates. Also announced were
the recipients of the scholar
ships given each year.
Participants in the basic
education and GED programs,
along with their families, were
treated to a cook-out featur
ing hamburgers and hot dogs.
After eating and enjoying fel
lowship with their families and
friends, the event moved to the
amphitheater where the awards
ceremony took place.
There were 146 students that
received certificates of com
pletion. This means that the
student advanced at least one
grade level in their studies and
in their testing. There were 84
students that have earned their
GED for the year.
Each year the Jackson
County CLCP and the Adult
Education Center inducts stu
dents into the National Adult
Education Honor Society.
According to leaders, this is a
great honor for these students
and will be a tremendous asset
when they are looking for a job
or going into post-secondary
education. Induction into the
society means that these stu
dents are hard workers that set
their sights on a task and com
plete it. They attend classes
regularly and show an abil
ity to work independently and
accomplish their goals.
Named as inductees were:
Gwen Marlow. Roseanne
West. Wendy Faulkner, Sarah
Bearden, Courtney Kent,
Tommy Turpin, Wayne Dixon,
Brian Moore, Adam Pressley,
Andy Betenbaugh, Ashley
Baker and Rodney Brown.
The $500 Baker & Taylor
Scholarship was presented to
Rodney Brown by Katherine
Rintoul, chairperson of the
Jackson County CLCP.
The $500 Lamar Gailey
Scholarship was presented to
Heather McCulloch by Sandra
Fite, executive director of
the Jackson County CLCP.
Heather’s mother was the first
student to ever receive the
Lamar Gailey Scholarship.
The Hazel and Norman
Cooksey $500 Scholarship
was presented to Adam
Pressley by Mackwell Etris of
the Commerce Lions Club.
Jim Scott, Chairman of the
Jackson County Community
Outreach presented a $1,000
scholarship to Judy Rouse.
Rouse also received the
EAGLE award for represent
ing the Jackson County Adult
Education Center and Lanier
Technical College in the state
EAGLE award program.
The Sue Mealor Award was
awarded to Roseanne West by
Fite. This award is named
in memory of Sue Mealor.
who was the chairman of the
Jackson County CLCP for
many years and also served
as the Maysville librarian until
her retirement.
The special Sumner Smith
Student of the Years Award
was presented to Sarah
Bearden by Joy Bates, lead
teacher at the Jackson County
Adult Education Center. This
award is in memory of Sumner
Smith, long time educator and
member of the Adult Education
Committee that was formed
many years ago in Jackson
County.

RECOGNIZED AT ADULT EDUCATION PICNIC
The second annual Jackson County Adult Education
Honors Day event was held Saturday, July 10,
at Hurricane Shoals Park. The Jackson County
Certified Literate Community Program honored
the 2009-2010 completers and the GED graduates.
Also announced were the recipients of the scholar
ships given each year. Among those recognized
were: (L-R) Roseanne West, Sue Mealor Award for
the highest GED score; Sarah Bearden, Summer
Smith Student of the Year Award; and Judy Rouse,
EAGLE Award recipient.

Robert Hollingsworth, Brian
Moore, Dylan Martin, Shelley
Welch Cox, Judy Rouse and
Rodney Brown.
Representatives from Lanier
Technical College. Jackson
County CLCP Advisory
Council and members of the
Jackson County Chamber
Leadership 2010 class were
recognized and thanked for
their contribution to the pro
grams in Jackson County.
Jackson County CLCP receives
contributions from the munici
palities and the county govern
ment to help keep these pro
grams funded and working so
that adults throughout Jackson
County can get the educational
help that they need.
Classes are located at the main
center located in Commerce at
the Lanier Technical College
campus Mondays through
Thursdays, and at the First
Baptist Church, Jefferson, on
Tuesday and Thursday nights
and on Saturdays. Citizenship
classes are also offered at the
Commerce location. All class
es are free and for more infor
mation on times and locations,

The annual GED gradua
tion ceremony will be held
Friday, August 6, at 7 p.m. at
Free Chapel on McEver Road.
Gainesville. There will be
many of the graduates from
Jackson County participating
in the ceremony and all fam
ily, friends and members of
the Jackson County commu
nity are invited to attend.
