Holton continued from IB
in the Midwest Conference
— lost three of five starters
from their receiving corps.
“I have a big, big chance of
actually getting playing time
as a freshman,” he said.
For his family to see him
play this year, it would prob
ably require a plane ticket. But
Holton knows those closest to
him will support him, even if
its from afar.
‘‘I know it's a good ways
away, but I’ll be home for
all the breaks I’ll be home
all summer,” Holton said.
“It’s just something I’ve got
to do and they understand
that. They support me 100
percent.”

THE NINE-HOUR ride from
Jackson County back to central
Florida last week didn’t seem
so bad for one Sunshine State
team.
All-stars from Pinellas Park
(Fla.) — a 47,000-person suburb
of St. Petersburg — won the
Dizzy Dean 13-year-old base
ball world series Wednesday at
Jackson County’s Lamar Murphy
Park with a 15-0 demolition of a
New Orleans-area team.
Pinellas Park coach Mike
Dodaro said he and his squad
were going to savor their victory
ride down 1-75.
“We"re going to have a nice,
safe ride home,” said Dodaro,
whose team went 5-0 in the tour
nament and averaged 13.8 runs a
game. “No speeding or anything
... We’re going to sleep good
tonight.”
That comfort came courtesy
of a superb pitching performance
and a seventh-inning offensive
outburst as Dizzy Dean World
Series play in Jackson County
came to a close.
Pinellas Park’s Nick Canchani
threw a one-hit shutout, while
the team’s bats erupted for 11
runs in the top of the seventh to
put away once-beaten Jefferson
Parish (La.).
Had the team from Louisiana
won, it would have forced a deci
sive “if needed” game Thursday.
An extra day’s stay in north
east Georgia was not in Pinellas
Park’s travel plans.
“We really couldn’t play
tomorrow (Thursday),” Dodaro
said. “Everyone had to go back
home.”
Canchani made sure that
wouldn’t be a problem.
The right-hander struck out 12
Jefferson Parish batsmen, over
coming some control problems
earlier in the tournament.
Dodaro noted that Jefferson
Parish wasn’t intimidated by
Canchani’s velocity and, as a
result, was aggressive at the plate.
But that worked in Canchani’s
favor.
“They were really swinging
the bats ... That just got him in
the groove,” Dodaro said.
Despite the lopsided final
score, the contest was actually
a pitchers’ dual for the first four
innings, with the only run com
ing when Pinellas Park’s Ryan
Savidge drilled a solo homer to
center field.
But Pinellas Park — which
outscored its foes 69-21 dur
ing the tournament — added
an insurance score in the fifth
and two in the sixth. Then came
the 11-run, seventh-inning bar
rage that buried Jefferson Parish,
which had already played one
game that day.
After Canchani retired the
final batter in the bottom of the
seventh, the celebration was on,
including the hoisting of the
trophy and the entire Pinellas
Park team being doused with the
water cooler.
Individual honors were passed
out, too, with Savidge being
named world series MVP. In
addition to his offensive prowess,
the shortstop had a big moment
on the mound during Pinellas
Park’s come-from-behind vic
tory over Cartersville July 19.
With Pinellas Park down 6-1
in the fourth, Savidge came on
and held Cartersville scoreless,
allowing Pinellas Park to rally
for a 10-6 win.
“Savidge had a huge tourna
ment ... He should have been
MVP for that there,” Dodaro said
of Savidge’s timely relief appear
ance.
Other Pinellas Park players
making the all-tournament were
Jacob Silverstein, Chris Berry
and Canchani. Don Oberst was
named the tournament’s Gold
Glove winner.
Jefferson Parish, which also
made a nine-hour trip to play in
the tournament, was presented
the sportsmanship award.
As for Pinellas Park, Dodaro
said his team’s unbeaten, six-day
stay in Jackson County provided
plenty of memories and that he
plans to return one day with his
family to the site of his team’s
world series triumph.
“We’re coming back,” he said.
