Jackson Trail to offer ag
education, FFA chapter
JACKSON TRAIL
Christian School, Jefferson,
has been approved by
the Georgia State Future
Farmers of America (FFA)
Association to start a middle
school FFA chapter for the
2010-2011 school year.
Agricultural education
will be taught in the sixth,
seventh and eighth grades,
and the FFA will serve as
the student organization.
Students will be able to com
pete in career development
events, livestock shows and
leadership activities starting
this fall.
Melissa Paul will serve
as FFA advisor and middle
school agricultural educa
tion teacher for Jackson
Trail.

GED graduation ahead
LANIER TECHNICAL
College will be holding
its annual recognition pro
gram honoring the Lanier
Technical College GED
graduates of 2010.
Jackson, Banks, Barrow,
Dawson, Forsyth, Hall,
Lumpkin and North Fulton
County graduates will be
honored at the ceremony to
be held Friday, Aug. 6, at
7 p.m. at the Free Chapel
Worship Center, 3001
McEver Road, Gainesville.
All friends, family and
others are invited to attend

GUM SPRINGS
Elementary School kinder-
gartners learned about con
cepts of living in a com
munity through a hands-on
experience.
During a six-day period
at the end of the 2009-2010
school year, all kindergarten
students traveled through
the community of “Panther
Point.”
Each student was able to
be both a consumer in each
community store, as well
as a producer, or worker, in
their own kindergarten class
store.
Students earned money
each day by having good
behavior and they would use
the money that they earned
to buy items that were for
sale in each store.
a bakery, a flower shop, a
dance hall and an ice cream
parlor.
Assorted goods were
available for purchase, such
as necklaces, cookies, tis
sue paper flowers, ice cream
sundaes, drinks and ice
pops.
Students also learned that
services could be purchased,
such as a manicure, shave,
and shoe shine at the salon
as well as an opportunity for
dancing at the dance hall.
The GSES Panther Point
Kindergarten Community
was created as a culminat
ing interactive experience
that reinforced concepts of
culture and working and
living together, which are
required Georgia state stan
dards in kindergarten.
LEARNING ABOUT A BAKERY
Kindergartner students at Gum Springs Elementary
School learned about aspects of a community, such as
a bakery. Students in the “Panther Point” community
earned money through good behavior to buy good and
services in the stores.
The “Panther Point” com- stores: A beauty salon/bar-

Fundraising opportunities
available for Gladiators games
THE GWINNETT
Gladiators fundraiser program
in conjunction with Peggy
Slappey Properties will again
be available to local organi
zations in North Georgia for
fundraising efforts during the
Gladiators 2010-2011 season.
“We are excited to be
involved again this season
with the fundraiser program,”
said Peggy Slappey, who is a
Braselton Town Council mem
ber. “It is extremely rewarding
to hear about all the ways
that the program has touched
many local groups on a very
personal level.”
Last season, the Gladiators

Fundraisers helped raise more
than $45,000 in charitable con
tributions for local organiza
tions in North Georgia. More
than 50 area church groups,
local schools and PTAs, as
well as nonprofit groups took
advantage of the program to
raise money for their respec
tive organizations.
Groups have the opportunity
to sell a day-of-game regular
ly priced $18 premium level
ticket for $15 and receive $5
from every ticket sold for their
group. Gladiators representa
tive are also available to assist
and help the groups with their
fundraising efforts.
The Gwinnett Gladiators
open the 2010-11 season
on the road before return
ing home to host the South
Carolina Stingrays on Friday,
Oct. 22, at 7:35 p.m.
The Gladiators are the
AA affiliate of the Atlanta
Thrashers and play all home
games at the 11,355-seat Arena
at Gwinnett Center, located
just off 1-85 on Sugarloaf
Parkway in Duluth.

WJIS gets new swing set
WEST JACKSON
Intermediate School will
start the 2010-2011 school
year with a new swing set at
its playground.
The swings were funded
and purchased by the 2009-
2010 WJIS Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO).
For the new swing set, the
PTO thanked the following:
Shelly Gephart, member;
Stacey Richardson, presi
dent; Kay Davis, vice presi
dent; Dennis Dorsey, treasur
er; Diane Carr, secretary and
principal; and Jamie Hitzges,
assistant principal. The PTO
also thanked WJIS parents
and students.
“Everyone really gave
a T.E.A.M. (Together
Everyone Achieves More)
effort,” said this year's PTO
president, Jennifer Stanphill.
“The 2010-2011 school year
is going to be another excit
ing year as the PTO once
again looks forward to com
ing alongside West Jackson
Intermediate in support of its
motto: ‘Every Child, Every
Day, Whatever It Takes.’ We
are blessed to have such a
great school with fantastic
parent involvement.”
