Fox that bit school worker tests positive for rabies
A FOX that bit a Commerce
School System employee
tested positive for rabies,
police chief John Gaissert
confirmed last Thursday
morning.
The victim had already
started post-exposure treat
ment for rabies.
“That’s the standard pro
tocol now,” Gaissert said.
According to the
Commerce Police
Department incident report,
Donald Nation, 52, said the
fox, which he noticed was
bleeding from the mouth,
ran out from under a dump
ster, bit him and ran back
under the dumpster.
An officer killed it with a
shotgun.
Nation was taken to BJC
Medical Center. He started
post-exposure treatment for
rabies pending the results of
tests on the fox.
“I urge all dog and cat
owners to get rabies shots
for their pets,” said Gaissert.
“We’ve had a lot of rabid
foxes reported in the area.”
In mid-June, a rabid fox
bit a 6-year-old boy as he
was riding his bicycle on
Hill Street. That same week
another fox was shot after it
exhibited unusual behavior.
It tested negative for rabies,
however.
Maysville police chief attends annual training
MAYSVILLE Police Chief Clarence Sullens attended the
Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police 2010 annual sum
mer training conference in Savannah in July as part of his
continuing education and training in the administration of law
enforcement.
Heads of law enforcement agencies from throughout the
state participated in the four-day conference. The Georgia
Association of Chiefs of Police is responsible for the delivery
of training to the chiefs of Georgia’s police departments and
law enforcement agencies.
This year’s conference covered a variety of topics including
social intelligence for managers, using social media in law
enforcement, making dollars and sense, open records act, what
federal partnerships can do for you, team prosecution of gangs
in Georgia, 2010 legal update, active shooter - bridging the gap
and 1st amendment issues regarding social networking.
Chief Sullens was among more than 440 heads of law
enforcement agencies attending the 43rd annual conference.
In addition to chiefs attendance at the conference, a signifi
cant number of departmental command staff were also present
to learn about training topics that will benefit their department
and community.
Eight accidents on 1-85 cause traffic jam
SHOPPERS entering or leaving
the Tanger Outlet Center via Banks
Crossing recently had to exercise
unusual patience.
Traffic on U.S. 441 at the Interstate
85 interchange was snarled due to
eight accidents on 1-85 that closed
the southbound lanes between Martin
Bridge Road and U.S. 441 for almost
five hours, according to the Georgia
State Patrol.
Southbound vehicles were routed
down Martin Bridge Road to U.S. 441,
then north to 1-85.
The wrecks, described by the Patrol
as “chain reaction” accidents, involved
20 vehicles and occurred at about 4:30
p.m. Among the vehicles were three
tractor-trailer rigs.
Seven people were transported to
area hospitals, but the injuries were not
life-threatening, the patrol said.
The patrol said heavy rains contrib
uted to the mishaps.
