I AM often sur
prised at the num
ber of people living
with guilt in their
lives. Many times
we have failed God,
and some of us
have failed our fam
ily, and even failed
ourselves. So many
of us are walking
around in a state
of oppression or depression
because of our past.
Now, don’t’ get me wrong,
we should be sorry for our sins
and shortcomings, but that’s
what repentance is all about.
Ask God for forgiveness and
change directions. Once we’ve
taken that step it is time to
move on for the Lord.
The Bible makes it clear
what happens when we are
forgiven. Psalm 103:12 says,
“As far as the east is from the
west, so far has he removed
our transgressions from us.”
Do you understand what that
means? He doesn’t remember
our sins anymore. My good
ness, if God forgives us we
need to forgive ourselves and
move on for him.
When we look in scripture,
we find a group of imper
fect people that were able to
overcome and live a victorious
Christian life. It’s not coinci
dental that these accounts are
in the Bible. They are placed
there to encourage us and
to remind us we can serve
the Lord even though we’ve
messed up IF we are willing
to ask forgiveness and change
directions.
The first person that comes
to my mind is David. Scripture
tells us that he committed adul
tery and murder, but the Lord
describes him as “a
man after my own
heart.” As we read
in Psalm 32 David
says, “Blessed is he
whose transgres
sion is forgiven,
whose sin in cov
ered.” David knew
he was a blessed
man because he was
forgiven. Yes we sin
at times, but we have an advo
cate with the Father, the Lord
Jesus, and he makes interces
sion for us.
Then I think of the Apostle
Paul. In chapter one of first
Timothy Paul calls himself a
chief sinner, a blasphemer and
a persecutor. Yet, Paul came to
know the forgiveness of God.
Once he had that experience,
Paul went on to urge others
to present their bodies as a
living sacrifice to the Lord,
as he preached the gospel of
Jesus Christ. In the end he was
persecuted for his faith, and
actually died for the cause of
Christ.
As a member of the human
race we were all guilty at one
time. We had a huge sin debt
that we could not afford to pay.
However, Jesus Christ paid our
debt in full on the cross of
Calvary. Once we repent and
ask for forgiveness, we are no
longer guilty. No one has been
bad enough, or gone too far,
that the blood of Jesus cannot
cover our sins. May we all
ask for forgiveness and live in
the victory of the old rugged
cross.
