Benton opens new school year with refurbished playground

The school PTO has been
hosting fundraisers to get
this project completed before
the students returned from
summer break this year.
“The whole community
was involved in this proj
ect,” said Pam Shields, prin
cipal at Benton Elementary.

STUDENTS AT NATIONALS
Two East Jackson Middle School students, Reagan
Robach and Jessica Compton, represented Georgia
at the National Leadership Conference in Chicago, III.,
over the summer.
EJMS represents state at
national FCCLA competition
TWO EAST Jackson Middle
School students, Reagan Robach
and Jessica Compton, repre
sented Georgia at the National
Leadership Conference in
Chicago, Ill., over the summer.
These students competed in
the state S.T.A.R. Events com
petition, which qualified them
to advance to the national com
petition. They were also one of
two groups from Georgia that
advanced to the national level for
their category of this competi
tion.
These students competed
in the Chapter Service Project
Display category, in which mem
bers chose a community service
project and highlighted it. They
created a visual display board
and a speech and taught others
about the serious effects of bully
ing in schools.
At the National competition,
Reagan and Jessica competed
against other state winners and
received silver medals for their
high scores.
Their club advisor, Abby
Tankersley, also attended the
National Leadership Conference.
Providence Academy to hold
hamburger and steak supper
PROVIDENCE Academy
will hold a hamburger steak
supper on Friday, Aug. 27,
from 4:30 to 7:30 at the
school on Lakeview Drive.
The school is across the street
from Commerce Primary
School.
Plates will cost $6 apiece
and can be purchased in
downtown Commerce at My
Daughter's Antiques.

Roberts given
UGA scholarship
ERIN ROBERTS, Jefferson,
has received a University of
Georgia Charter Scholarship
for the 2010-2011 school
year.
Roberts is a graduate of
Jefferson High School, and
is the daughter of Martin and
Ellen Roberts.
In-state students receive
$1,000 per year in addition
to the HOPE Scholarship.
The award is renewable for
an additional three years if
the recipients maintain cer
tain academic standards.
The Charter Scholarship,
named to reflect the uni
versity’s distinction as the
nation’s first state-chartered
public university, recognizes
first-year students with stel
lar academic records, leader
ship and community involve
ment, and a respect for and
commitment to intellectual,
social and cultural diversity.
The Charter Scholarship is
funded by the University of
Georgia Foundation.
The average SAT score of
this year’s Charter Scholars
exceeded 1400 and their
average high school GPA
exceeded 4.0. Usually, the
top six to eight percent of
incoming freshmen are rec
ognized as Charter Scholars.
