THE JACKSON County
Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol
(U.S. Air Force Auxiliary)
Squadron 148 of the Georgia
Wing, Group V, was represented
at the recent Braselton Festival
at Braselton Park.
The group had a booth and
the Color Guard led the Fourth
of July parade.
“We are particularly proud
of our Color Guard as we are
one of the few CAP squad
rons to have a military Color
Guard,” said Tim Ledford.
“Besides leading events such
as the Braselton Festival, they
also present the colors during
the national anthem at various
public events such as the G.
Braves Memorial Day game at
Coolray Field.”
Three of the cadets were
recently honored. C/MSGT
(Cadet Master Sergeant)
Rebecca Ensley was the first
cadet from Squadron 148 to win
the Cadet of the Quarter Award.
C/CMSGT (Cadet Chief Master
Sergeants) Andrew Patterson
and James Ensley received
the Mitchell Award, one of the
highest awards that CAP has
to offer.
The next opportunity for
cadets to “take off” will be
August 29 at the Monroe Walton
County Airport. Cadets ages
12-17 will have the opportunity
to take part in orientation flights
in both “O” flights (powered
flights) and glider flights.
The Jackson County CAP
squad is a composite unit and
welcomes both cadets (12 and
over) and senior members
(adults), with a wide variety of
opportunities. The group meets
at 6:30 p.m. each Monday at the
Jackson County Airport in the
modular building at the end of
Lauren Drive, which runs left
off Lyle Field Road.
“All are invited, whether you
live in Jackson County or sur
rounding counties,” Ledford
said. “It’s hard to imagine a
better way than joining the Civil
Air Patrol for young people to
perform a civic duty as well as
to develop good leadership skills
for the future. Also, if you're an
adult looking for a way to serve
your country as well as their
local community, especially in
these times when so many in the
national guard and air guard are
serving overseas, regardless of
your age or health, if you want
to serve we need you in the
Civil Air Patrol (U.S. Air Force
Auxiliary).”
The three primary missions of
Civil Air Patrol are: Emergency
services, cadet programs and
aerospace education. CAP air
craft and personnel are mobi
lized for natural disasters, civil
defense and to aid local gov
ernment emergency services
when requested. CAP also flies
in support of federal agencies,
including their efforts in the war
on drags.
