JCCHS volley Panthers
continue hot start, surpass
last year’s win total
THE JACKSON County
Comprehensive High School
volleyball team has won more
matches in the first two weeks
of the season than it did all of
last year.
The hot-starting Panthers,
4-29 a year ago, continued to
impress this past week, beating
Tallulah Falls (26-24, 25-23)
and Lumpkin County (23-25,
25-20, 25-5) Thursday at home
to move to 5-3.
“I enjoyed watching the girls
come together after every play,”
coach Crystal Colley said.
“They had great teamwork.”
Jackson County, now 2-0
in Area 8-AA/A play, seeks
its sixth victory of the year
this Thursday on the road in
a rematch with Tallulah Falls.
The schedule continues on the
road against Winder-Barrow
and Salem Tuesday.
Leading servers against
Tallulah Falls and Lumpkin
County were Samantha Kennett
(19 points), Naly Thao (18
points) and Breanna Chapman
(16 points). Kennett led the
team in assists with eight
and Naly Thao in digs with
five. Breanna Chapman led
Jackson County in kills with
13, while Jasmine Williams
had six.
Jackson County's volley
ball success has extended
to the junior varsity ranks
where the Panthers are 2-0,
beating Tallulah Falls and
Lumpkin County Thursday.
“I am confident in my
players and coaching
staff,” Colley said, point
ing to junior varsity coach
Wesley Colley and assistant
coaches Amy Thompson
and Katie Weiser. “I am
looking forward to a great
season.”

JACKSON COUNTY is still
unbeaten on the softball dia
mond but continues to battle
with inconsistency in the early
going according to the Panthers’
coach.
Lisa Robinson said she sees
great potential in this group but
said it has yet to play to its capa
bilities in a 2-0-2 start in 2010.
“I honestly think we can be
one of the top two teams in our
region if we play like we’re
capable ... We've got all the
tools, we've just got to know
how to use it,”,” Robinson said.
Jackson County picked up
its second victory of the year
Tuesday when it beat Hart
County on the road in extra
innings.
The Panthers struck for four
runs in the eighth inning under
international tie-breaker rules in
claiming their first region win.
Victoria Wood, Madison
Whitmire, Andrea Ledford,
Brooke Griggs and Ashley
Lance all had hits in the vic
tory.
It was Wood, a freshman,
who broke the tie in the eighth
with an RBI double.
On the mound, Haley Shinall
allowed three first-inning runs
but responded with seven shut
out innings to earn the victory.
“She shut them down com
pletely ... They couldn't hit
her,” Robinson said.
Though Jackson County got
the win Tuesday, Robinson felt
the contest shouldn’t have been
that close. The coach said the
game showed that the team has
much work to do.

“We're still not at our best,”
Robinson said.
Robinson said her team
played well in spurts in a 1-0-2
finish in the season-opening
Hawk-Bulldog Invitational
Wednesday through Friday at
West Jackson Park.
Jackson County, who faced
two Class AAAAA teams and
one Class AAAA squad, tied
Harrison 3-3 Wednesday, beat
Mountain View 6-4 Thursday
and tied Loganville 4-4 Friday.
Highlights included
Whitmire's two-run homer in
Jackson County’s 3-3 draw with
Harrison and Ledford's two-run
double in a close victory over
Mountain View. Griggs also
went 3-for-3 in the Panthers'
44 tie with Loganville, while
Jessica Laird was 2-for-3.
Whitmire supplied a crucial sac-
fly RBI in that contest as well.
But Robinson said the consis
tency is just not there yet from
the team's heavy hitters.
“We are consistently incon
sistent,” Robinson said.
On the mound, Shinall
pitched in the ties against
Harrison and Loganville and
came on in relief in the victory
over Mountain View. Kortnee
Satterfield started and pitched
most of that game.
Cross Country
JCCHS runners gear up NEGA Championships
By Ben Munro
THE JACKSON COUNTY cross country
teams would have preferred a more laid-back
start to the season, but inclement weather changed
those plans.
With this past Saturday’s meet with Buford
rained out, Jackson County will now debut
in the large-scale, 31-team Northeast Georgia
Championships (NEGA Championships) this
Saturday at Athens Christian School.
The NEGA will feature the top teams in the
area and beyond, with schools as far away as
Augusta running in the field. The event includes
middle school, junior varsity, varsity and cham
pionship races.
Though some Panthers and Lady Panthers will
run in the 3K junior varsity races, plenty will be
pitted against tough varsity competition.
Senior Brittany Aikens returns to defend her
championship in the NEGA varsity girls’ race last
year, winning by a comfortable 1:20 margin with
a time of 19:54. The Lady Panthers — who are
aiming for a region title this year — welcome a
few freshmen to the fold, however, so Saturday’s
event will be an interesting first meet for those
newcomers.
“We'll just see how they do in a 5K,” coach
Jospeh Brubaker said.
The boys’ team is almost entirely new and
doesn't have a great deal of 5K experience.
“Some of them will get thrown into the fire
pretty quick,” Brubaker said.
Though running in such a large meet may
be a bit nerve racking for the newer Jackson
County runners, it should serve as a good
gauge for both the boys’ and girls’ squads.
“It’s a good course ... It should be a good
measuring stick,” Brubaker said. “I’m a little
concerned about the limited training we have
going in.”
The varsity girls' race starts at 8:30 a.m., fol
lowed by the boys at 9 a.m. The junior varsity
boys’ race begins at 9:30 a.m„ followed by the
junior varsity girls at 9:40 a.m.
Jackson County won’t run anyone in the
championship races that begin at 10:05 a.m.
(girls) and 10:40 a.m. (boys). Middle school
races follow at 11:15 a.m. (boys) and 11:20
a.m. (girls). The event concludes with the
awards ceremony at 11:45 a.m.
Brubaker expects his runners’ adrenaline
to be flowing when the starting gun fires
Saturday.
“I’m sure they'll be pretty nervous seeing
all those people at the starting line,” Brubaker
said. “But it’s going to be fun.”
