JCCHS RECEIVES
GOLD ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Jackson County Comprehensive High School received
a national High Schools That Work (HSTW) Gold
Achievement Award based on the progress of local
school leaders and teachers in improving school prac
tices and raising student achievement. JCCHS is one
of only 11 high schools in the nation to receive the Gold
Achievement Award in 2010. The award was presented by
Dave Spence, (right) president of the Southern Regional
Education Board (SREB) to Bruce Yates, JCCHS assistant
principal, at the 24th annual HSTW Staff Development
Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

JHS class of 1960 plans reunion
THE JEFFERSON High
School graduating class
of 1960 will hold its 50th
class reunion on Saturday.
September 25, beginning at
4:30 p.m., at the Jefferson
Clubhouse.

that have not received infor
mation about the event or
need more information, are

Area students receive honors
SEVERAL JACKSON COUNTY students have been award
ed academic honors for the summer semester at Piedmont
College.
Students named as dean's scholars for the semester have
earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, and students named to
the dean’s list have earned a grade-point average of 3.5 to 3.99.
Jackson County students named as dean's scholars include,
Asia K. Usher of Commerce. Brandi N. Turpin of Commerce,
and Abby L. Ginn of Nicholson.
Melanie K. Bryant of Nicholson was named to the dean's
list.
Adult Education Center announces
new hours for GED classes
THE JACKSON County
Adult Education Center has
announced new hours for the
Lanier Technical College
Campus. 631 South Elm
Street, Commerce. The
‘WHERE IN THE WORLD?’
This year, Benton Elementary
students will have an opportu
nity to learn more about their
world. In an effort to famil
iarize students with famous
places, the administrators
have adopted a “Where in the
World?” theme for the year,
and have developed clues that
are given each week on the
daily announcements. Each
week will bring a new set of
clues about a different loca
tion. Students are encouraged
to research and write their
answers on a ballot that is
dropped into the “Where in
the World” box near the world
map in the cafeteria. At the
end of the week, a correct
answer is drawn from the box.
The winning student each
week will receive a prize. Pam
Shields, principal, and Shirley
White, assistant principal, are
shown packed up and ready
to begin their journey.

All of the classes are free.
Classes are held in
Jefferson at Jefferson First
Baptist Church in the
annex.
Classes are held Mondays
and Fridays, from 5 p.m.
until 9 p.m. and on Saturdays
from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Classes are held fulltime
at the center located in the
hours are 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday.
English as a second lan
guage (ESOL) classes are
held at the Commerce
Center on Tuesdays, from 6
p.m. until 9 p.m.
Citizenship classes are
held on Thursdays, from
6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
