Habitat opens thrift shop in Commerce
JACKSON COUNTY Habitat for Humanity has
just opened a ReStore (Thrift Store) in Commerce
at 208 Homer Road (in the old Bi-Lo’s complex
behind Hardees).
Since the formation of the Jackson County
Habitat chapter, the group has built eight homes in
and around Jackson County.
“Our goal and mission has always been to
support and serve the people in our community,”
organizers state. “Now, with the opening of this
new Thrift Store, we have another way of helping
folks out. There will be a grand opening celebra
tion on Monday, September 13, but you can come
and visit us now.”
The store hours are Mondays through Saturdays
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. As a full Thrift Store, items
offered will include everything from clothes, shoes,
furniture, knickknacks, books, and even some
building supplies, automobiles and boats.
“The possibilities are unlimited,” organizers state.
“As our inventory grows, so will the surprises. We
like to think of this store as a treasure chest waiting
to be discovered. At Habitat ReStore we believe in
our community. Together, we can help others in
their time of need.”
Usable and resalable donations are being accept
ed for the store.
“We may even be able to pick up certain items
from your home or business depending on the size
and quantity of these things,” organizers state.
Churches and civic organizations can also help
by having a book, clothing, or furniture drive or by
volunteering.
Vince Mercardante is the general manager and
Jed Mercardante is the store supervisor.

Horseshoes continued from 1A
said of the world champi
onship.
“You have to stand
two feet back (from the
other pitcher) and there
is no noise, no knocking
shoes together,” Decker
said, explaining that some
pitchers will do whatever
they can to distract the one
pitching. “They play dirty,
I guess you could call it.”
The best tournament
in history, according to
Decker, was held just a
few years ago, when the
last two opponents pitched
137 shoes before they
could break a tie.
“It took two days,” he
said. “That’s awesome. I
wish that’d be me one day.”
The next world champi
onship tournament will be
held in Monroe, La., and
the 2012 event will be at
Knoxville, Term.
Decker plans to keep pitching.
“You can’t be in it for the money,” he said. “You won’t win a car, you
won’t make a lot of money (he won $100 for his sixth-place at world),
but it’s a lot of fun. I love the fellowship. You meet some great people.
I love it, I love horseshoes dearly.”

Also near Memphis is Elmwood Cemetery, where you will find the
graves of nearly 1,200 Confederate soldiers and 20 Confederate gener

grounds. It is a serene, peaceful place to visit. Make sure to allow time
to walk among the graves and read some of the markers, including that
of Virginia Bethal Moon, “a Confederate spy who became famous dur
ing the War Between the States.”
