Church News
A few days ago,
as I was think
ing about the
problems that are
going on around
me, I feel as if
God gave me a
word in my heart
for myself and a
word for others.
“Don’t be part of
the problem; be
part of the solution.”
If we think about that, it’s
good advice in church, at
home, and in the workplace.
Every single day we can make
things better or we can make
things worse. Sometimes
our actions affect others and
sometimes our actions affect
us alone.
Let’s start with how our
actions affect others. If I hear
someone spreading gossip, I
can keep it going or I can
remember what God’s word
says about gossip. Proverbs
18:8 tells us, “The words of
talebearers are as wounds,
and they go down to the
innermost parts of the belly.”
But gossip is fun sometimes,
WE THINK. It makes us feel
important to give the “dirt”
on somebody; but think about
that verse. Do we want to
wound the people around us?
Sometimes that includes our
family and our friends. The
next time we have this choice,
my prayer is that we can be
part of the solution. May we
go to God in prayer on behalf
of those involved rather than
tearing people down.
What may start out as “a
harmless tale” may grow
and cause dissension in our
homes, on our jobs, and in
the house of God. Proverbs
6: 16-19 speaks of the things
that God hates. If you read
until the end of those verses,
Living Word Worship
Center, Jefferson, Garments of
Praise is offering free clothing
to anyone in need. The hours
are the first Saturday of every
you’ll see that God
hates “sowing discord
among the brethren.”
So the next time we
think about “stirring
the pot” in a church
rift, may we remem
ber the mind of God
on this matter.
What about com
plaining? It is so easy
to complain, and
it makes us feel better at
times, WE THINK. Actually,
Philippians 2:14 tells us,
“ to do all things without
murmurings and disputing.”
Ouch! That hits home with
me. Why is it so easy to com
plain? I decided the next time
I start to complain. I’m going
to turn it around. I’m going to
get out a paper and pencil or
mentally, I am going to think
about positive solutions to
the situation.
Once I begin to think posi
tively, instead of negative
ly, about the things going
on around me, it’s sure to
improve my attitude. I believe
a positive attitude can liter
ally change our lives. When
we begin to encourage people
they’ll probably want to spend
more time with us. They may
even seek our advice or ask
us what has brought about the
change in us.
Now that’s when we get
to give God all the glory. He
is the one who can change
our paths and He is the one
who deserves our praise. And
the best part is He is ready,
willing, and able. How about
you? My prayer is that we
will remember Proverbs 23:7
which says, for as he thinks
in his heart so is he.

ate pastor at Lighthouse
Congregational Holiness
