JEFFERSON'S Kyle Kashuba recorded
a sub-19 minute time Saturday in the
Dragons' opening meet, running an 18:44 to
help his team finish eighth in the Northeast
Georgia championships in Athens.
Athens Christian hosted the event, which
featured middle school, junior varsity and
championship races in addition to varsity
competition. Jefferson, ranked 10 th in Class
AA in the gatfxc.com preseason poll, ran in
the 26-team varsity race.
Kashuba’s time of 18:44 was good for
18 th overall. Trae Timmerman finished sec
ond on the team with a 19:44 and placed
44 th overall. Jake Sherman also broke 20
minutes, running a 19:53 and finishing
49th.
Rounding out the Dragons’ scoring
were Ash Warnock (62 nd , 20:14) and Alec
Jameson (64 th , 20:16).
Jefferson, with 237 points, outran sev
eral of its region foes at the meet, includ
ing Hart County (273), East Jackson
(289), Jackson County (432), Oglethorpe
County (458) and Dawson County
(462).

Panthers finish 14th out of 26
teams at NEGA Championships
By Ben Munro
JACKSON County freshman
runner J.T. Wood ran a 20:27 in
his first varsity race Saturday to
help the Panthers finish 14 th out of
26 varsity teams at the Northeast
Georgia Championships.
Wood finished 71 st overall, fol
lowed closely by Dusty Haralson,
who clocked a 20:41 (84 th over
all), and Tyler Ledford, who ran a
20:49 (92 nd overall).
Jonathan Mayfield (21:02.
97 th ) and Tyler Manculich (21:30,
116 th ) rounded out the scoring for
Jackson County, which has an
almost an entirely different roster
this year.
With 432 points, Jackson
County out-legged region foes
Oglethorpe County (458) and
Dawson County (462), but fin
ished behind fellow 8-AA schools
Elbert County (189), Jefferson
(237), Hart County (273), East
Jackson (289).
“I feel good about it,” coach
Joseph Brubaker said of the race.
“I think we are a little bit ahead of
where I thought we might be.”
Brubaker noted that Jackson County was missing Nunez, who is
expected to contribute this year, and noted efforts of Mayfield, who
ran a 21:02 with virtually no training prior.
Jackson County doesn’t have a standout runner but could possibly
start building on consistency in the lineup. The Panthers have a few
runners within reach of running a sub-20 minute 5K.
“We’re just trying to get a pack of guys who can break 20,”
Brubaker said.
The coach notes the parity this year on the team.
“We might have six to seven guys fighting for the top three,”
Brubaker said. “I think it’s great to have that kind of competition.”
The boys return to action Thursday at the always-tough Banks
County course. The Eagle meet is Sept. 18 at East Jackson.

The other ninth grader was Kourtney Axelburg, who finished sixth
on the team and 88 th overall with a 26:00.
“I was super happy with Michayla, Maddie and Kourtney for it
being their first race ever,” Brubaker said.
The coach pointed to the efforts of another runner, Baird, who ran
even though ill.
Brubaker noted, in general, the grit that both his teams displayed.
“A lot of people ran tough, and it was good to see that,” he said.
The Lady Panthers return to action Thursday at the hilly Banks
County course. The Eagle run is ahead Sept. 18 at East Jackson,
which will put Jackson County against some of its region rivals.
“That will be the next time we’ll all see each other,” Brubaker said.

HOSTING A six-team
varsity play date Saturday,
Jefferson (12-4. 2-0) finished
3-1 on its home floor.
Jefferson started with a 25-8,
25-20 victory over Winder-
Barrow (Class AAAA), beat
no. 9 ranked West Hall (Class
AAA), 25-18, 25-17. fell to
Class AAAA 25-23. 25-22
and finished with a 25-23,
25-12 victory over Walnut
Grove.
“Overall we had a very good
day and it was nice to finally
get to play in our own gym,”
coach Mike Paul said. “I am
very proud of our improve
ment in many areas.”
Statistical leaders were
Cassie Metcalf (18 aces, 19
kills), Amanda Daniel (four
aces, five kills, 55 assists),
Taylor Cramsey (five aces, 27
kills), Eden Starnes (one ace,
15 kills), Sarah Wood (two
aces, 10 kills, eight assists),
Savannah Bogue (one ace),
Savanna Holland (four kills),
Brianna Patterson (nine aces),
Chelsea Runkei (two aces)
and Amanda Flowers (one
ace).
Against Winder-Barrow,
Paul noted that Patterson’s
serving sparked the team in
match one (25-8) and gutted
out a victory in game two.
“(We) showed real charac
ter coming from behind to
win the second game,” Paul
said.
The coach noted his team's
resolve in knocking off West
Hall in the second match.
“We entered the match
inspired and played with an
attitude that we would not be
denied,” Paul said.
Cassie Metcalf led the
Dragons with seven kills and
six aces for the match.
Paul likened his team’s
close loss to Apalachee in
match three to slugfest.
“It was like a heavy weight
fight with the teo going toe to
toe in the center ring.” he said.
“Each team took their best
shots at the other. Apalachee
played very well and the Lady
Dragons fought very hard but
came up just a little short.”
Jefferson overcame a slug
gish first game against Walnut
Grove in the final match ( after
trailing 14-8), rallying to win
the first frame and wining the
second handily.
Prior to the play date,
Jefferson went on the road
to earn its ninth win with
a 25-9, 25-17 victory over
Rabun County.
The win moved the Dragons
to 2-0 in 8-AA/A North play.
Paul said Jefferson had its
“best night of the season pass
ing and this led to a balanced
attack.”
The Dragons tallied 13
aces, with Eden Starnes lead
ing the way with five. Taylor
Cramsey had nine kills on
her way to a .750 hitting
percentage, while Cassie
Metcalf had seven kills with
a percentage of .700. Starnes
added four kills and Amanda
Daniel had 19 assists and
Sara Wood had three.
Savannah Bogue came
off the bench as the libero
and had her best night
passing and recorded a
service ace. according to
Paul.
“I was very pleased with
our performance against
Rabun County,” Paul said.
”We were focused and our
play showed it.”
