SPLOST 5
Special Local Option Sales Tax
What is SPLOST?
SPLOST is a special purpose local option sales tax that raises money for vital repairs,
improvements, and debt reduction.
How much will be raised and how will it be used?
Over the next six years, SPLOST is projected to earn $47.5 million dollars. Jackson County
will receive approximately $33.7 million dollars, or 70%. Most of this, $23 million dollars, is
earmarked to pay down debt on the new County Jail. The remaining balance is for new
satellite EMC facilities ($1.2 million dollars), Roads ($6.8 million dollars), and Parks and
Recreation ($2.0 million dollars). The remaining $13.7 million dollars is distributed to the
municipalities.
What are other benefits of SPLOST?
SPLOST is an alternative to burdensome property tax increases, with up to 40% of its
earnings coming from out-of-county residents who spend money here while conducting
business, shopping or dining.
How will my town benefit from SPLOST?
According to their population and mutually agreed upon formula, the earnings will be
distributed throughout the towns located within Jackson County. Each town has it own
priority list.
With the potential to raise over $47.5 million dollars over the next six years, SPLOST
will help to reduce the debt on the jail, build three new EMS facilities, build and
repair roads, and build a new county park.
Each town with Jackson County will also get a percentage of the funds raised for
their own enhancement projects.
