God uses ordinary people
IF YOU’VE read the story of Esther
in the Old Testament you realize that
she was called for “such a time as this.”
King Xerxes gave a banquet that lasted
six months and turned around and gave a
banquet for seven days. During that ban
quet, he drank too much wine. He called
for his wife. Queen Vashti, to come and
parade around in front of the guys. She
refused. Because of her disobedience,
she was banished from the kingdom.
It didn’t take long for Xerxes to begin
to look for another queen. Finally, 127
young ladies were chosen as potential candidates. After a year
of beauty treatments, he'd decide who would be his queen.
Well that ordinary young lady, called Esther, happened to be
one of the candidates for this position. Esther did not have an
easy life. She was uprooted from her homeland, her parents
died, and if it weren’t for her cousin Mordecai, she would have
been an orphan. For her to become queen seems literally impos
sible.
When you read the rest of the story, you’ll see that God was
orchestrating so many things in her life including being chosen
as queen. She was in the right place at the right time, and God
needed her to do a work. Mordecai found himself in some
trouble and Hamas, the second in command, not only wanted to
kill Mordecai, but had a decree signed to kill all of the Jewish
people.
That’s when Mordecai called out to Esther, saying you may
very well be queen for such a time as this. He asked Esther to
risk her life to go and talk to the king, which was against their
custom unless the king summoned. At first Esther was hesitant,
but later changed her mind. She was smart enough to ask the
Jews to fast for her while she did the same. A few days later she
approached the king and she found favor in his sight.
In the end Mordecai also found favor with the king, and
Hamas was put to death. The bottom line is Esther’s willingness
to get out of her comfort zone, literally saved the Jewish people.
It would have been easier for Esther to say, “Forget it, I'm on
Easy Street in my castle, I’m not going to risk my life. I’ve got it
too good.” But she took a stand. She had to choose between her
comfort and God’s Kingdom. And she made the right choice.
That’s the way it is for many of us today. It would be much
easier at times, to sit back and tell God to send someone else
to do what He has called us to do. Esther had to step out of
her comfort zone to fulfill God’s plan for her life and for her
people. Just think about it. It was one ordinary girl who did an
extraordinary work for God.
What’s God asking you to do? I can just about imagine that
He’s calling you to do something that you can’t do by yourself.
That’s great because you don’t have to. He is ready, willing and
able to go to battle with you and work through you. Are you
willing to take a stand and to get out of your comfort zone?
When He calls, say, YES LORD. I guarantee you; you won’t
regret it. In fact, you’ll most likely stand in awe of what God
was able to do through you, just a common, ordinary person.
Hey, check out the Bible, that is the kind of folks He’s used
throughout the ages and that’s the kind of folks He wants to
use today.
