SJES sport stackers to take
aim at world record attempt
STUDENTS IN the sec
ond through fifth grades at
South Jackson Elementary
School will participate in
the Fifth Annual World
Sport Stacking Association
(WSSA) Stack Up on
Thursday, Nov. 18.
During the course of the
day, each sport stacker will
be up stacking and down
stacking various pyramids in
prescribed patterns at light
ning speed for at least 30
minutes, combined with a
variety of fitness activities.
For the fifth year in a row,
Guinness World Records is
billing it as the “World's
Largest Sport Stacking
Event.” Sights are set on
nearly 300,000 stackers par
ticipating as sport stacking
as Speed Stacks continue to
gain popularity around the
world.
Sport stacking has been
termed a “track meet for
your hands at warp speed.”
It is a sport where students
up stack and down stack
12 specially designed cups
called Speed Stacks in pre
determined sequences as fast
as they can. Stackers race
against the clock, compete
in relays and often combine
sport stacking with fitness
challenges as part of physi
cal education classes.
Last year, 276,053 stack
ers participated to break the
previous year's Stack Up!
Record of 222,560. Once
again, tens of thousands
of stackers are expected to
contribute their sport stack
ing skills from across the
United States and around
the world in countries
such as Germany, Japan,
Egypt, Australia, Columbia,
Singapore and the UK.
According to Bob Fox,
WSSA Founder and CEO,
the Guinness event is a won
derful way to bring together
sport stackers across the
globe.
“Sport stacking is an
activity enjoyed by all ages
and cultures,” Fox said. “It
promotes hand-eye coordi
nation, fitness, teamwork,
speed and lots of fun. This
is the fifth year we've
teamed up with Guinness
World Records, and we're
excited to have another shot
at breaking a world record.
We're also pleased to have
the support of Wonderful
Pistachios as a present
ing sponsor to broaden our
reach and spread a positive
message about stacking and
healthy food choices.”
Sport stacking is in more
than 32,000 schools and
youth organizations world
wide. It's appealing to teach
es and students because it’s
easy to learn, but very chal
lenging to master. Benefits
include improved reaction
time, hand-eye coordination,
concentration and focus.
The WSSA is the govern
ing body for sport stacking
and promotes Stack Meets,
leagues and tournaments
around the world. Speed
Stacks is the official equip
ment supplier to the WSSA.
To take part in the record
setting Stack Up!, schools
and organizations around
the world are required to
register 25 or more stackers
with the WSSA. Once they
complete their 30 minutes of
stacking for each participant
(any time during November
18) they are required to send
in an online verification
of numbers to the WSSA,
who will pass on the total
count to Guinness for offi
cial recognition. For more
