group to present plays
TWO AWARD-WINNING
playwrights will take the
Gainesville Theatre Alliance
stage in February, alternating
nights of hauntingly beautiful
drama and farcical comedy for
north Georgia theatre goers
of various moods at Brenau
University's Hosch Theatre
February 8-19.
“Intimate Apparel,” written
by Lynn Nottage and a prelude
to her Pulitzer Prize winning
play of 2009, follows the story
of African-American seam
stress Ester, who stitches exqui
site undergarments for both
boudoir and bordello. Nottage
was praised in the Wall Street
Journal as “on the shortlist of
America's best contemporary
playwrights.”
The second play, “The
Underpants,” was adapted by
actor/comedian/writer/musician
Steve Martin and follows the
zany antics of a proper German
butcher and his voluptuous
wife, whose bloomers acci
dentally create a sensation in
their 1910 alpine town. Martin
was honored in 2005 with the
Mark Twain Prize for American
humor.
A free stage tour will be held
on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m.,
at the Hosch Theatre, at Brenau
University.
A preview performance of
“Intimate Apparel” will be held
on Monday, 7, at 7:30 p.m.
Discounted tickets are avail
able and donations taken dur
ing intermission will benefit the
non-profit group To Write Love
on Her Arms.
The opening night of “The
Underpants” will be Tuesday,
Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m., followed by
a free reception.
Performances of “Intimate
Apparel” will be held at 7:30
p.m. on Feb. 9, Feb. 11-12, Feb.
15, Feb. 17, and at 2:30 p.m. on
Feb. 19.
Performances of “The
Underpants” will be held at 7:30
p.m. on Feb. 8, Feb. 10, Feb. 16,
and Feb. 18-19, and at 2:30 p.m.
on Feb. 12-13.
Tickets for either play are $16-
18 for adults, $14-16 for seniors
and $10-12 for students. Seats
may be selected online at www.

Rabies, wellness clinic planned
THE HUMANE Society of
Northeast Georgia will hold
a rabies and wellness clinic
on Saturday, Jan. 29, from
12:30-4 p.m., at its facility in
Gainesville.
In addition to low-cost rabies
shots and annual vaccinations,
microchipping for cats and
dogs, as well as flea and tick
control products also will be
available at the clinic. The cost
is $10 per shot and $20 per
microchip.
No appointments are needed
for the event; however, puppies
and kittens must be at least
three months old for rabies vac
cinations. All pets must be in a
carrier or securely leashed. No
flea dips will be available at
the event.
All proceeds from the rabies
and wellness clinics benefit
the animals in the care of the
Humane Society of Northeast
Georgia, which is located at 845
West Ridge Road, Gainesville.

Auditions ahead Tuesday for theatre productions
THE GAINESVILLE
Parks and Recreation
Department will hold audi
tions on Tuesday, Jan. 18,
for its Pam Ware Summer
Community Theatre.
Auditions for “Oliver!”
will be held at 4 p.m. for
children (must be complet
ing grades 3-8) and at 6
p.m. for adults only, at the
Gainesville Civic Center.
Callbacks will be held on
Thursday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m.
for children and 6 p.m. for
adults.
The auditions will include
three parts — cold reading
from the scrip, choreogra
phy and vocals. Participants
are asked to prepare a 16-bar
audition song with either
sheet music or accompani
ment CD. Cast members are
responsible for their cos
tumes.
Performances will be held
July 13-16.
Also, auditions for the
children's musical theatre
workshop production of
“Captain Louie, Jr.” will be
held on Jan. 18, at 4 p.m.,
at the Gainesville Civic
Center. Children must be
completing grades 3-8.
Callbacks will be held
on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 4
p.m.
The auditions will include
