SJES marks Red Ribbon Week with special activities
SOUTH JACKSON
Elementary School recent
ly observed Red Ribbon
Week with special lessons
and themes each day of the
week.
Red Ribbon Week was
started in 1985, when
Enrique Camarena, a U.S.
Drug Enforcement Agent,
was murdered while investi
gating a major drug cartel.
At SJES, students were
taught about specific drugs
and dressed up for themes
each day — such as wear
ing caps on “Put a Cap on
Drugs” day and sports team
wear for “Team Up Against
Drugs.”
The school held a luncheon
honoring law enforcement
members in Jackson County,
Arcade and Jefferson, and
EMTs and firefighters. An
assembly followed the lun
cheon.
ASSEMBLY PART OF SPECIAL WEEK
Jeff McNatt, Corey Epps, Hubert Edwards, Bill Rosenberg
and Karen Rodenroth are shown at an assembly South
Jackson Elementary School recently held to mark Red
Ribbon Week.
Guest speakers at the assembly included Corey
Epps of the South Jackson
Fire Department; Jeff
McNatt of the Jefferson
Police Department; Alan
Johnston of the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Office with
a K-9 unit; and Kings Bridge
Middle School cheerlead
ers.
Another guest speaker was
Bill Rosenberg, a four-year
football letterman at the
University of Georgia and
four-time SEC Academic
All American from 1989-
1993. He is also the son of a
SJES teacher.
During the assembly, two
students — Grace Chancey
and Ayla Dartez — who won
the Red Ribbon Week essay
contest read their essays to
the entire school.
SJES was also decorat
ed with banners, bows and
streamers for Red Ribbon
Week.
